Souray and the New Reality

Richard Labbe- La Presse

Sheldon Souray is playing like a guy who is in search of a large contract for next season.

The veteran defenceman, who can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, already has 6 goals and and 6 assists in 10 games since the season began. We know his shot can go threw the boards and opposing goaltenders- thats why Guy Carbonneau likes using him on the powerplay.
Up until now, Souray has collected 10 points on five on four situations. All because his shot is like a fatal weapon to oppostion goalies. In hockey terms, it is called a cannon. And opposition goalies don't like it. "I feel more comfortable this year compared to last" responded Souray when asked what his magical recipe was. I am only trying to play my game, without trying to over do it. I'm helping the team and I'm helping the offense."

At this rate, the big defenceman could have his best season offensively. His best career season was when he had a grand total of 39 points in 75 games.

The scouts have also noticed that Souray can score the big goals. His sixth of the season, on Saturday night, against the Leafs, permitted the Canadiens to even the mark, and to get a precious point.

"It's easier when everyone is playing well", he added in a modest tone. Thats whats happening on the powerplay; everyone on the team is playing well, and I'm benefitting. Lasy season, it was a little different for me; I had a difficult start to the season but I eventually got going. My defensive play suffered. I don't want that to happen again. Yes, I want to contribute on offense but I also want to be a good defenceman, a responsible defenceman. That is more important to me than the points."

Sheldon Souray is no dummy. He knows that the face of the new NHL has changed. He knows that the big immobile defenceman are going to disappear.

He knows in this new reality, defenceman have to help out offensively.

"It's a new style of play" he recognizes. Today, defensemen have to be able to help offensively. We only have to look at the Sabre's defence to be convinced, watch how they get involved in the offensive zone."
Sheldon Souray is definitely going to continue playing that way. He has to, because all the defensemen are doing it. That should allow him to get more points along the way.

It could also get him a nice new contract between now and the end of the season....

Makes me wonder what Komi is going to do. I like him but should we trade him while he still has market value? He claerly lacks that all important offensive and mobile punch required in the "new" NHL. But ya gotta love it when he crunches Tucker...

Say as part of a deal for Conroy or something like that?

When Bouillion comes back...dandy comes back. I figure Cote is a sound 7th D-man for depth?

Hmmm?

Komisarek is not an offensive blueliner, and probably will never see a PP in his life, he is a solid MOBILE defensive defensemen, who can phsyically intimidate and shut down other teams top lines/big players.

He may not be right now, but I see him joining rushes, coming in downlow looking for a back door pass.  I think he may turn into a dangerous (to the opponents) offensive/defenseman.  I am not saying he will put up Orr numbers or anything like that.

souray has a good hard shot, but the guy still makes me nervous in his own zone! he loses the puck and a least twice a game gives the other team a scoring chance! get rid of these bad habits and i think souray will become one of the best D-men, if not the best in the NHL!

This opening thread by fatherhab is a good one!

Guys like Souray, Rivet, Markov and whoever else is playing out their contract will be hard to sign. Guys like Saks, Kovy, Huet and Sammy will have priority in this new NHL and be locked into good dollars while players like Murray, Downey and Begin will be affordable thus signed. Leaving the middle range guys difficult to negotiate with because of the Cap.

It will be a tough off season for Gainey. Someone has to go. Who will it be?

Souray is a HUGE defensive liability (check his plus/minus) who thankfully is clicking on the PP .... but he's streaky too, so if he can't shore up his defensive failings, things could look very bad if his slapshot leaves him for a 10 game stretch.  Also, Souray is SOFT ... he never lines anyone up for a major hit and he doesn't through his body around (remember, he's had a few injuries and you can tell he tries hard to avoid making or taking hits)

The solution I think is to find a solid, stay at home defenseman who can back up Souray and cover his miscues. Unfortunately, Rivet has not stepped up to that responsibility ... in fact, Rivet has been making plenty of his own blunders.  Perhaps a trade for a solid stay at home defenseman can be made during the season, and our #1 and #2 dmen will be set.

Komi is coming along, and he will no doubt become a steady defensive minded defenseman who makes very few mistakes and can step up and lay on the body when we need it. I see him becoming a Craig Ludwig type.  Pairing him with Markov makes sense, and this pair could become a terrific #1 and #2 pairing that eats up 30 minutes per game. For the time being, they are #3 and #4. Gainey will have to assess Markov's progress mid year and see if he can sign him long term.

As for #5 and #6, we are well stocked, with Sandy, Streit, Bouillon, Cote, Rivet (he'd be better as a #5 or #6), and we have young guys developing in Hamilton who could step in.

I think Rivet is a good pairing for Souray. At the moment he just needs to simplify things in his own zone. He's just trying to do too much.

After Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss to Toronto, Coach Carbonneau was asked by CTV's Brian Wilde if he would trade some of Souray's scoring for better defense as a team.

Carbo's response was that the entire team can play better defensely without compromising the scoring.
