First off, I complained about a week ago about Souray and all his givaways, so I must say that his play of late is quite good.
Now for my post, is Huet capable of staying upright??? The first goal for Buffalo was just plain awfull, the second was a great shot but he never challenged Drury and the third one was the same. But on all of them he was on his knees. And most goals he allowed this year was the same thing. He needs to shape up and fast.
Shooters are told to go high on Huet. He has great reflexes, but you only cover half the net when you're on your knees. I'm sure Huet knows this and he's probably working on it with the goalie coach. If it doesn't improve by the mid-way point of the season, THEN we have a real problem.
It's not just that he goes to his knees more often than a sinner at high mass. On the second goal against he was WAY off his angle. Drury had half the net to shoot at.
Bottom line is that like a lot of second-tier goalies, Huet needs to be playing with confidence to play well. When it's not there, he overcommits, goes to his knees too often and too early in hopes of stopping shots he doesn't really think he's capable of stopping, and sits back too much in his net out of fear of being caught out of position.
Great goalies don't give in to fear. How we're going to get Huet to play with confidence again I don't know. Carbo just needs to keep playing him and giving him a chance to come up with that big game that will change the way he sees himself.
You may remember last year, it was the 2-0 win over Boston on a Saturday afternoon at home that turned the tide for Huet, who had not been spectacular before then. He stole the show, and after that game was a different player altogether. We need both him and Abby to have games like that one -- and the sooner the better.
The team has a lot going for it, and is off to a decent start. With some hot goaltending, we'd be winning these close ones.
Guy Carbonneau didn't have to think long before explaining his team's loss last night. Matter of fact, Carbonneau didn't even hesitate: if the Sabres won, quite simply, it's because their goalie played better than the Canadiens one.
"The first goal really hurt us, said the normally frank coach. You can't hide it. Against a team like that, you cannot give away goals."
The first goal , a long shot that ricoheted off Huet's shoulder before going in the net, was like a Tommi Salo Special.
"Was Huet good? Not good enough, said the coach. Ryan Miller was better than our goalie. Its as simple as that."
In the Habs room, Huet did not hesitate to take the blame, confirming that he should never allowed the shot from Jiri Novotny.
"I really don't know what happened, but it is certain that is was a crucial error, said Huet. Against a team like that, it is not necessary to make mistakes like that... I am not to proud of that play. I thought the puck was going to fall in front of me."
Huet was not the only one to have a strip torn off him by Guy Carbonneau after the game. The coach did not appreciate the lack of effort by certain players, who did not play 60 minutes according to Carbo.
"We played well for a few minutes here and there, but we need to play that way for 60 minutes, not 20 minutes" said Carbo. For a game like that, there is no reason for the guys not to be ready. I will never accept that guys are not ready."
Newsflash Carbo- YOUR TEAM ONLY SCORED ONE GOAL!!!. No with can be argued that the bad goal let in by Huet hurt the confidence of the team and set the tone for the rest of the game. But geesh the way Ninny was talking they were a very confident bunch. You want to point the finger Carbo point it at the bunch of underperforming forwards out there who only managed one goal. So what were you hoping for, a 1-0 win?

uh...Barry...did you read Carbo's comments? He did point out the lack of effort...exaclty what you said. What's the underlying issue that you're trying to get at?
Saying that the other goalie played better than ours also implies that the other goalie could have played very well, which he did.
Also, check out the "Hey Barry" string for a more serious discussion about Huet's problems. Saying things like "You can only cover half the net when you are on your knees" is plain wrong, and to say that Huet can't stay up ignores last season when guess what, he did stay up when he needed to.
It comes down largely to confidence, (as mentioned by Desi) but check out both my and Barry's posts there if you want to see a more in depth analysis of what is a more complicated situation than being implied here. I'm not saying that what I say is necessarily right, just that this is an over simplification in what I can only assume is to vent frustration with his poor play so far.
Let's not talk of him going a half season like this just yet.
