By Tim Panaccio Inquirer Staff Writer An era of Philadelphia Flyers hockey has ended. Flyers general manager Bob Clarke has resigned while coach Ken Hitch**** has been fired. The club will announced both this morning at a 10 am news conference at the Wachovia Center. Hitch**** had been starting his fourth season and was given a two-year contract extension in training camp while Clarke had been the team's GM for 19 seasons. The Flyers are 1-6-1, their worst start since 1989-90 = that was the first time the Flyers had fired Clarke. It is believed the club asked for Clarke's resignation. On friday, Clarke said he took responsibility for how poorly the club had began this season.
Crazyness. Amazing that TSN still hasn't posted it and It has been on the net for over half-an-hour. I am not surprised though, as Clarke just doesn't seem to get how the new era works. Hitch just got himself a 2 year paid vacation if that is what he wants.
Clarke really needed to go. He traded for or signed some very slow defensemen and forwards. Poured a bunch of money into Forsberg who is passed his prime and on a sharp decline. Gagne is the only positive Clarke has to show for his last four years of work. Also since Hextall, has he ever filled the net with an elite goalie?
I think it was a mistake to fire Bab**** but maybe he also doesn't fit into the new NHL type game. How can you judge him fairly though with the pre CBA type roster he has to work with. Hard to say but the players may be totally not respecting him anymore. Bab**** doesn't come across as a players' coach but a Hitler type dictator. Hard to say. Only the players that play for him know for sure. I'm sure some will come out and give fault to his coaching method now that he's canned.

I'm sure you meant Hitch**** and not Bab****, altho, he could be the next one to go, Scottie Bowman was seen observing their loss to the Oilers in the company of Ken Holland. Is there a move coming there?

Thanks Fatherhab...I did mean Hitch****!
Are you saying Bab may get the can also? I didn't reallize Wings weren't responding to his coaching. Is he being the scapegoat for the lack of playoff success last season?
Im not sure if Philly will be the same "ballsy" team they were without hitch(ock. Sorry that one was bad, i just couldn't help it. Anyway, its amazing it took this long for Clarke to go, and they didnt even fire him. Hitch(ock is a great coach, he will find work and be succesfull soon again.
yep..once again one of the best coaches in the league takes the fall for a bunch of underperforming players.
Why is this a surprise? After all, it is in fact the specific job of the coach to get the most out of his players.
In any case, Hitch**** is the kind of coach who can lose the ear of his players at times because of his all or nothing motivational approach.
Yes I know Plouf..it is certainly the coaches job to make sure that his millionaire players are motivated and try their bestest and hardest to be good hockey players

And you don't think Hitch(ock is laughing all the way to his own tax shelters? I think he probably made some pretty great coin himself. Maybe that was the problem. There was nobody desperate enough to win.
No Plouf I am not feeling sorry for Hitch****. He will land on his feet just like any other coach who gets canned does. He won a Stanley Cup for Cripe sake. he must know a wee bit about the game. But in reality, you have guys like Forsberg who has been unable or unwilling to lead that team, Gagne who has underperformed, Esche who could not stop a beachball, Hatcher who cannot skate..it goes on and on. At least Clarke pays the price this time too instead of the usual fire the coach and blame it all on him approach that is so popular. Hitch is a great coach and will land somewhere (do not be surpised that, if Carbo falters, that BG does not come calling on his old Dallas GM).
