Bonk and Saks
Permalink Closed

It seems like when we play the bigger grittier teams, Bonk out plays Saks. This isn't a knock against Saks. He isn't a big stud elite centermen who can handle any situation. If Bonk can continue this play, it'll mask our weaknesses down the middle.

Anyways, it's good to see that line take the pressure off the first line for offense.

I thought Saks and the first line had a good game, actually, along with the 3rd line. Both lines were really skating. And I also liked what Begin brought. The only line that (still) looked a bit off was the 2nd line, but there's some improvement there. Kovalev still looks like he can score any time he wants. But where's Samsonov?

Oh, and finally we really outshot someone.

AB i dont think the 1st line played that bad, they just didnt cash in on the chances they had but bottom line is they had a good number of chances both saks and ryder had real good looks but some nights they dont go in.Bonk in my mind played the same way last 4 games just this game his looks found the net whereas saturday night they didnt! Also good to see Sourays shots finding net seems when they start going in it just sort of snowballs and he starts shooting with more confidence like 2 seasons errr 3 years ahh (damn strike year) you know the year he had 16 goals or something like that 2003 right!! Anyway lets hope these guys feed of their offence and we get some consistant scoring from a lot of different ppl. Ill take 8 20 goal men instead of one 40 and 2 or 3 20+ scorers.

 Fair enough guys.

Also agree that Samsonov was invincable. Lots of Cap space floating around.

Invisible. Totally agree.
Also Huet was sort of shaky at times (but some great saves in the 3rd when it was needed), and our defense didn't always deal well with the forecheck, especially in the first period.
But those are my only real complaints. 3-0-2, who'da thunk?

A good "team" finds ways to win and gets offense from improbable sources on a given night (see Bonk). As for Samsonov I agree. It is early but I am seeing signs of floater written all over him. To Kovalevs credit he seemed inspires last night. If we coudl only bottle that and put it in his water every night! What frustrates me about Kovy is that he is like a stripper. He shows you a little bit., gets you all worked up, then puts the flannelette nightgown back on.

Hey Guys -- Let's hear it for Radek! He's always been a hard worker and a role player, but the Calgary game was a breakout night for a guy that's gotten a lot of criticism on this board. Wouldn't it be great if the tough, scoring center this team needs was Radek Bonk? (I know, that's a stretch -- but I do think the guy deserves a salute for playing a great game.)

I think Koivu played a good game.  In fact the entire first line did.  Just no points.  Those kind of nights happen fairly regularly.

Actually, on both Souray goals, wasn't it the Saku line on the ice.  Sure they were both PP goals, and the league doesn't recognize who is on the ice for those, but for us regular viewers of one team in particular, that is a plus, and it accentuates their worth to the team.

Kind of like playing Begin where for 10 games, he doesn't score a point.  Carbo still sees his worth to the team, in number of hits, blocked shots, good defensive play and energy he creates (although last night, a lot players created their own energy - Souray, Rivet, Komisarek especially.  But also guys like Ryder and Higgins, Kovalev, Johnson, Bonk.  I even saw Streit and Ninimaa throw a couple of hits each.)

Koivu's game last night was fine, just nothing special point wise.  He never shies away from physical teams and even throws some surprisingly explosive hits from time to time.  (I just remember one against Thornton in 04 playoffs where he knocked him on his ass in the neutral zone.  Nothing like the board cruncher Komisarek gave to the same Thornton in the same playoffs tho.

To edit my own post:  I just looked at the box scores and saw that the entire first line got on the score sheet with one assist each.  Still a quiet night point-wise tho.
