Since it would appear our Habs are gonna be in a ton of shootouts this year...mostly due to our propensity to not create scoring chances...I'm thinking we should pull a Murray.
Stroke of genius putting in relative unknowns on the shootout....
ie...Vermette...playing to his hometown and energy and letting him try to be the hero..which i think he was...
Why not appease the Hab faithful and toss Latendresse in there...surely he must have a move or two to go with that nice release..
What about Begin...imagine how revved the crowd would get for that one..
Or Bonkers against his former team?
Anyways...are you allowed to sub goalies in a shootout a la Mighty Ducks 2 ie put Abby in since he seems to be better at them than Huet??
I agree, change up from the regular shooters for the shootout. Begin would certainly get the crowd revved, let him go 1st. Are you admitting you watched "Mighty Ducks 2"? brave......lol
Murrays approach was far from just pulling one out of his @$$. He knew what he was doing. Its not like Vermette and Fisher are 2 guys out of no where BOTH had 20 goals last season and know how to put the puck in the net, they arent throwing nobodys' out there like Malik and tricking the other goalie. These guy KNOW how to put the puck in and how to score, Murray is just blessed with more of those players than montreal. If it were my choice, unlike you 2, i would NEVER stick begin out there. Getting the crowd goaing will NTO win you that extra point. Putting the puck in the net however will therefor Kovalev, is an automatic at EVERY shootout and SHOULD go first to put the pressure on the OTHER team when he DOESNT hit the post. Followed by either Ryder or Higgins who both have great releases which would then be followed by either Perezhogin, Koivu, Latendresse ( i know he has moves...thats all the AHL/QMJHL players do in the minors is screw around with tricks and stuff...look at Robby Schremp! ) or even samsonov who has some hands himself! Any others you might as well give the point to the other team

Believe it or not, CJ used to say that when fooling around in practice that SOURAY was one of the best in the shootouts..I know..I can't believe it either lol but I guess he used to put em in pretty steady.

Every once in a while Souray's got some moves on offense though. I remember a couple times last year he made forecheckers look bad with a sweet sidestep at the top of the circle.

Remember Stevie B did score 11 goals for us last year...who's to say if he played on a team less offensively inept he wouldn't of gotten more. I think a huge contributor to Ottawa's success last season was when teams fell behind to them they had to open their game up leading to more Ottawa goals...
The reality is a shootout is crapshoot most of the time...and thats why I love it...so dang entertaining..one of the nices i've seen all year was scored by that Finnish d-man in Minny, and last year's was Malik (whose highest goals in one year BTW is 7).
Why not toss a wildcard out there..if Begin makes it thats gonna deflate the other team and up his team...its worth the risk...IN MY OPINION.
I wouldn't do it all the time...but might as well give it a shot.
I think hockey can learn a thing or two from soccer here. In the world cup, shootouts tend to be quite important. These shootouts seem like a crapshoot, but for the last i can't even remember how long, Germany has been virtually unbeatable at them, even though they were one of the most defensive teams around (except this year, where a new manager made them very offensive). At the same time, the much more offensively gifted England has been absolutely rubbish at them, no matter who was on the team. Many other teams follow similar patterns of consistently being good or bad, with a spectrum in the middle.
Why such a difference? Simple. Germany has every player take a penalty shot every practice. This year, some of the English players looked like they had never taken one before in their lives.
The Habs should do the same. every player should take at least one penalty shot every practice. The players with the most goals in the previous five practices should be given the shot in the game, with adjustments made if one player has a goalie's number one night, if there has been one player to score every shootout but had a few bad practices, or if the coaches see other special circumstances. It should be seen as a friendly competition, and if the shots are split between the two goalies, injuries shouldn't be an issue. That being said, if a goalie has a sore groin, then shootouts get cancelled for that day.
Practice makes perfect, and reward the people who are good at it, big name players or not.
