Ab, I have screenshots to prove the fact that Regher hit Downey late and cheap. (Just have to figure out how to post the darned things, they're too big!)
Downey HAD his head up - he was looking STRAIGHT AT Regher in the seconds before he was hit. No way would he have thought that after backhanding a rather easy shot down the ice, with every other red jersey behind him , taking two easy and long strides while being screened by another Flame, not driving toward the net, that a freight train was about to take him out. Regher came out of nowhere straight at Downey with elbows flying.
CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP. And, disgusting. Can anyone say "head-hunter"?
I can't believe Regher didn't get at least a game.
Dianne- I know we all get emotional. But lets face it. The hit was borderline at best. Had it been Downey laying the hit out (and do not think for a milisecond that he wouldn't had he had the chance) and Reghir laying on the ice, we would have all been calling him a hero and saying what a clean hit it was. Hockey is a game of inches. Downey had his head down and the guy had him lined up. Could it have been a 2 minute interference penalty? Absolutely. Th epuck was a few strides ahead of him. But there was nothing dirty about the hit. It was an open ice hit that Begin or Downey or Murray would throw a hundred times if they had the chance.

First off...the Downey hit was borderline, although VERY predatory...and And-o is convinced that many GOHABBERS watch a TOTALLY different game than he does!
How on Earth was Souray NOT the number one star???
In fact...did nobody else notice the last Habs penalty kill when Souray iced the puck (via a tee'ed up slapper) RIGHT AT PHANEUF'S HEAD....too funny!!! It was a deliberate act...and it sent a clear message!!!
...anyway, good effort...although Huet fought the puck ALL NIGHT!
...Bonk - well...And-o won't even start!
...Perezhogin is playing really well and getting zero notice!
I dunno, I have watched that hit over and over again, and still clearly see Downey with his head up right before getting laid out. Regher (sp?) was head-hunting, plain and simple. I, like everyone else, love a good hockey hit. That one, in my opinion, does not fall under that category.
And And-O, this morning I am all for Souray for PM! I love the way this guy sends a message. Hey Dion, heads up!

He admitted it somewhat in a post game interview. He said that he was trying to energize his team after falling behind on a shorthanded goal. He said he was looking to make a big hit. I count 2 1/2 strides before that jacka$$ laid Downey out. And Barry, I would not be heralding Downey as a hero. I don't care for cheating, Hab or not. I was as pi$$ed with Ribeiro with his flopping around as the Bruins were, and I was none too pleased when Ryder snapped his head back last season to draw a high sticking penalty when the other player's stick was at least a foot from him. I don't know how anyone could call that hit anything other than a cheap shot, especially when the hittee (Downey) was diagnosed with a severe concussion. That's career ending territory.

Ok..here is something comparable then. What about the Kovalev hit on Tucker last year? As much as I hate that little puke, there are posters on this team that still show the video of the elbow he threw on Tucker and laugh. Can anyone explain the difference tio me between what Kovalev did and what happened to Downey last night?

Downey hadn't just try to throw an elbow at Regher with the game lost and out of hand, as Tucker did to Kovalev.

It is completely irrelevant heet and you know it. Two wrongs do not make a right.

barry , im not saying the regehr hit was cheap but a little late , and as far as the kovy hit on tucker , he got him with the elbow , but his elbow was against his body , not like it was an elbow lead , he tucked his arm into his body and that just happened to be the part that hit tucker . as far as two wrongs dont make a right but it made them even , eye for an eye as i see it .
Hit was not cheap at all. Players go by the 3 second rule after a player has released the puck. The hit was clean and on time. Downey got caught with head down and paid the price.
