There's two ways of doing bussiness for Gainey. Wait for guys like Chip, Locke and Kots to make an impact in a few years or make key trades now to fill key holes and go for it now.
Maybe we're not far off if we add the right player or two. Kovy and Souray for Madano and Zubov for example.
Now, I'm not trying to ruffle your feathers MC because I know we already had a huge debate about Kovy. I feel the same about Souray, hate to see him get traded! It's just that you need to give up quality to get quality and also trade away salery to fit into our cap so we may also have to throw in another player.
AB thinks that the likes of Madano and Zubov could fill huge holes and needs. Those two may just be enough to win the Cup this season. Zubov would more than make up for the loss of Souray's talent and Sammy(who I find is similer to Kovy) would make up for the loss of Kovy. We could even bring up Kots to take a winger's position.
Anyways, my point is, we may not be that far away with the proper multi-player trade. If we wait for the kids, we also have to rebuild our Defense because many are entering free agency. With so much parity in the league now, if a GM thinks he can go for it with a proper trade, maybe he should otherwise it's still a gamble waiting to win by building the home grown way.
What do you guys think? Are we not way better with a couple key holes filled? Imagine if we can add a big skilled centermen and a talented offensive defensemen on the back end.
Do we wait and stay patient with the building from within? Either way, there's no quarantees. Every time a rookie is ready to make a difference, we may lose a vet due to Cap space or free agency. It's going to take patients to win big this way but also lots of luck and good timing.
If you recall the Canes had a good team during the season but they tinkered and added Recchi and Wieght. It was enough to win the Cup! If our season starts panning out this way, I say we have to make a couple key trades and go for it also.
We get a lot of talk on here that suggests we set up a package- always Kovalev and something(even though we are told Kovy is lazy, arrogant, probably bad for team harmony etc,etc...) and then think some other team is going to trade top players to us.Seems a bit odd to me!

And how does that address the potential of long term success for the Habs by trading for two past their prime players.
Because there are those who believe that we are weak up the middle and Modano maybe be available to strengthen that area. Dollar for Dollar, Modano and Kovalev are equivalent under the cap, production wise, they are equivalent as well. Dallas have 7 centres under contract to fill their need in that area.
Mike Modano,Eric Lindros,Jeff Halpern,Stu Barnes,Patrik Stefan,Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro.
Kovalev maybe someone that they could use on the wing.
Well if it is true that Modano and Dallas are on the outs, that's something to try to take advantage of...and Kovalev is the kind of guy who could make the Dallas fans forget Modano (for a little while), which would allow management to do something like that. Dallas fans would get all excited by Kovy's ability. Only later would they pay the price....
But - I still would rather just see Kovalev pick his game up. We're only 2 games in. Let's see what he does over the next dozen or so games. And remember, this is basically a totally new line. Things may need to be shifted around a bit.
I think almost everyone here would rather Modano and Zubov than Kovalev and Souray. And I am one who thinks Kovalev is great for the team. Modano has a great attitude, great production, is defensively resposible, and would guide our youngsters in a way that Kovalev simply isnt able to. And Zubov is certainly a better defender than Souray is.
Trouble is, Dallas loses huge. They stripped Modano of captaincy to light a fire under him and to reward another players success, not to trade him. If they wanted to get rid of him, they wouldnt have done that, since teams will now offer low thinking there is a rift between the two. They also have no reason to trade Zubov.
Kovalev and Souray both have very low trade value right now, and yeah, I would like that trade, but it just won't happen unless we sweeten the pot with Kostsitsyn.
And I know you weren't suggesting we wait for Locke to develop, but I feel like correcting that anyway. This is in all likelyhood his last year to make it. He has the skill, but there are only so many times you can get cut from training camp before you are not part of a teams plans for the future. That's largely why I think he should be our first call up for injury replacement, since we need to see if he can fit before we cut him loose. Also, a few successful games in the NHL would make him a tradeable asset if we went that route.
