What we need to realize is that Lats may not improve in juniors like we think. He needs to play with men. Even practicing and being in their presence will make him a smarter player. He'll get his ice time but for now he has to improve as a hockey player. Carbs and co want to take it slow with him. He doesn't need the added presure of being a go-to-guy at this point. Being on the fourth line is a good start. He's still part of the team and learning what it takes. Carb is using Begin for now to guide him.
If they throw him on the upper lines, we'll be saying he should be scoring and the expectations may be too high for this kid. Lets not break him. On the fourth line, he'll plug in the odd goal and get a good hit or two. He'll improve slowly but certainly and we'll then see him being used in other situations.
He's a tough player but he doesn't possess the skills to be a gifted scorer or play-maker. He's not a great skater and doesn't have soft hands.
It's just way too early to tell what type a player he'll be....maybe a Claude Lemieux type guy...who knows? We have to let him develop and mature. For now, we can't squeeze orange juice from an apple.
Good points AB. One season as a fourth line player is no disaster. (We all know that power forwards take a long time to develop, and.....etc...yadda yadda.)
I totally agree that Lats fits well with the 4th line and there is probably no better player to help guide him along than Begin. I would like to see Carbo toss him into the mix a bit on the PP though. He has shown a willingness to mix it up in front of the net and we could use a big man screening the opposing teams goalie. Hey....it wouldn't hurt to at least try it a couple times....
Carbo's going to slowly bring this kid into the fold, but for now he wants him to learn to play the defensive side of the ice.....learning how to play in your own zone is probably not something that he focused on in junior. I like Paul Maurice's ways of rewarding players. Doesn't matter who you are, if you do the things he asks you to do, he rewards you. He doesn't have much time for the Prima Donnas.
...although And-o has not watched either game so far, he would not hesitate to parachute Lats into Samsonov's slot on the 2nd line!!!
In fact, not to knock Samsonov (since he has always been a streaky type player), but And-o would permanently place Sammy down on the 3rd line (maybe even 4th line...with some PP time) in order to really spread-out the potency of the offense!!!
Playing Kovy and Sammy together is just to much fluff.
