Trading for a number one centre
Permalink Closed

Just curious guys, a lot of you are saying that we should trade for a number one centre, and Souray and Aebischer seem to be the prime suggestions for trade bait. What number one centre do you guys think we could get for them?

Souray had a bad year last year, and there is an overabundance of decent starting goalies in the league.

Remember also that we are close to the salary cap limit, so we can't have anyone for more than the 4.4 million we would drop in the deal. Just for reference, that is less than Koivu is getting paid, and he is not overpaid. That means to get someone better than him a team would have to be willing to give up someone they are getting a very good deal on.

I can't see any good deals around the league, but if someone can say "This team would give up their number one centre because they desperately need a starting goalie and another defenseman" then maybe I will be converted.

The other deal mentioned was for Gomez. While that makes me salivate, what cap space would we shed to take on 5 million? Would we send Bonk and Niinimaa to the minors (not sure our pocket books are deep enough though) and a young guy, while only carrying 21 players or would we find someone willing to take their salaries on?

Maybe it's just me, but so long as we are speculating, I find names and reasoning far more interesting than "we need a number one underpaid centre for two guys who didnt play well last year."

You have hit directly on the problem.

Number 1 centres don't grow on trees, and nobody (ie habs fans on message boards, not just this one but others too, habs fans on call in radio, etc... ) seems willing to give up anything to get one.

Aebischer and Bonk to Jersey for Gomez, sure they money might work out, but why would the Devils want this??  I mean Brodeur is gonna play 70 games anyway.

We might as well forget it.There is pretty much nobody available for trade. And if there are I fear we would have to give up way more than we can afford.

You mean a second round pick, a third round pick and a conditional fourth for Thornton won't fly?

I agree with all you guys. 1st line centres dont grow on trees and the trades that some fans come up with to acquire people are usually unrealistic. Not to mention that they usually talk about players that arent even on the market(Marlowe isnt going anywhere).

But one hting that has come us which might be interesting is that Jordan Staal has signed with Pitsburg, and thatr gives them 3 top end centres. Now im not saying that the habs can now get crosby, but Staal or Malkin are both top end prospects and since they are competing for the same spot in the lineup, I wouldnt be surprised to see one of them traded for some extra D (but dont go thinking itll be souray, like marlowe he isnt going anywhere).

Not saying this is GOING to happen, but i sure would LIKE it too.......lol

The only way we land a number one is if some team gets nailed by a rash of injuries and we can package Souray and/or Aebischer and/or Bonk with a pick or prospect to land him. It won't be happening anytime soon. I think our best bet under a cap is to role 4 strong lines with maybe 1 person making over 5 mil and the rest averaging about 2 mil a season. I think the Habs are slowly getting to that point with all the excellent 2nd&3rd-line level prospects we have. Hey, it worked for Buffalo and Carolina, amongst others.

I would love to see it happen too, but in reality they aren't competing for the same spot. Staal is an injury replacement and is going to be sent down before he plays 10 games. And even if they did have both guys all ready for the team this year, they would most likely keep them and have one play on the third line. There wouldn't be a better team down the middle.

If they did decide to trade him I can't even begin to imagine what it would take to pry him away... Then again, Jack Johnson went for relatively little. Two good players, but neither was a great.
