Just returned form the Habs/Ottawa game in Truro, NS.
What a blast! Our seats were very low (five rows up, behind the Sens' net), so it was very hard to pick out play patterns etc. So my impression was more from the point of view of who was hustling and visible.
Latendresse - WOW! The guy was all over the ice and had a ton of ice time, and I believe three points. He is big and mobile, and hits a ton. I loved him, and he was easily my #1 star for the night. This guy should play for the Habs this year, and not stuck on the fourth line.
I was also impressed by Kyle Chipchura, who showed more offensive power than I expected.
Ferland and Lapierre also impressed, as did some little guy named Ajay Baines - never heard of him before! The guy was like a bowling ball.
Ribeiro was very impressive as well, with a few good moves, and seems to have bulked up a bit. He was very physical, and almost got in a fight once. He certainly was not the Ribeiro I saw last year.
The lines were juggled a bit, but the top two seemed to be: Chipchura/Higgins/Ryder and Latendresse/Ribeiro/Kostytsyn. Ribeiro and Latendresse had chemistry, I'd say, and Kostytsyn was holding his own. Higgins was his usual self, implicated regularly and contributing offensively with two goals. Ryder didn't do much, but would appear off & on out of nowhere with a good chance.
Aebischer played a very good game.
Markov was steady, but no other defenseman really stood out. Andre Benoit maybe (who saw a lot of PP time on the point), but the rest were pretty invisible. Not bad I guess, no glaring gaffes, but nothing spectacular either.
The disapointing thing was so many stars not there - Koivu, Samsonov, Kovalev, Souret, Bonk, Rivet, Streit, Komisarek - and not only not dressed, but not in the province at all. The Ottawa spares were sitting rehind behind us - Emery, Chris Neil, Wade Redden, and a whole bunch of other I didn't recognize. (And sitting right beside me was the drummer from Great Big Sea.)
The players dressed at the local high school, right next to the rink, so we saw them all walk over to the game, fully dressed and in sneakers. I spoke to Ryder, Downey, Doug Jarvis, and a few others as they were walking by. I asked Downey if he was going to drop 'em, and he replied "How about McGrattan?". Sadly, he didn't deliver on his words.
Hockey people were everywhere. I saw Gary Bettman, Ted Saskin, Bob Gainey, Mike Gartner, Don Cherry, Ron MacLean, John Muckler. It was a big party! I can't wait to see it on TV.
And the best thing - the Habs won!!!!!!!!

Awesome! Thanks a lot, Nil! And I'm so happy to hear the Habs won and finally put together a good game.
I find it interesting though that you mention all the vets weren't there. But I think that just may have contributed to the win. Guys like Kovalev and Samsonov have nothing to prove and haven't been playing so well lately. With them out of the lineup in favor of the kids who want to make the team, I think that results in a better effort.
I'm also glad to hear Aebischer won. If Huet doesn't have a good year (don't get me wrong; it's been two preseason games and I love the guy still), we know we'll always have Aebischer to fall back on. That's why I love hearing that all of our goalies are having strong games.
Man, this game sure sounds like a good one. I can't wait to see this thing on CBC!
Nil, you lucky dog! Sounds like the real deal. I'm happy for the people of that town that got close and a little personal with these pros.
Did Chipchura skate OK and keep up with the flow? Did Ribs look quick or was it his play-making skills that looked good?
May be hard to answer those questions with as low as you were to ice level.
The angle was a problem to be sure. They all looked big and fast from there, and Ribs and Chipchura both seemed to be good skaters. Now I know Ribeiro will never be fast, but he seemed as fast as any of them from my angle, as did Chipchura. Ribeiro had a few good moves too.
But from any angle, it was obvious that Latendresse was a superior talent - a big too.

Awesome! I took a million pictures too, but have not downloaded them yet. I'll do that tonight after my first day of my new job (I delayed the start a day because of the game.) Anyone who wants to have a view of my pics can PM me and I'll e-mail them.
Unforutnately because of my low seat, the action shots are not much, but I do have some nice ones of the players walking from the school to the rink.

Nilsey- it bothers me that a class organization like the Habs did not dress more veterans. Like the Leafs the other night in Halifax, for some fans this would be there only chance EVER to see their team. If we are to chastize teh Leafs we must do the same for the Habs in this respect. I understand that it is pre-season and you want to see the kids, but a few more token veterans thrown in would have been a nice gesture. There were a few guys in the habs lineup last night that will never see a regular season game in the NHL. Oh well, I guess you get what you pay for lol.
On the positive side, there is NO WAY that Gainey can send Latendresse back to Junior. He is a huge asset to a very small team and plays with heart and passion. What does he have left to prove in Junior? The guys has done everything asked of him and more in training camp the last 2 years. I say unload some veteran deadwood and keep him.

I agree, but wouldn't it be better for him to go to Hamilton to develop, instead of trying to become an NHLer under the microscope of Montreal fans/presse or worse yet, not getting full time minutes?
And thanks for the report Nil. Sounds like an exciting night.

The problem is Heeter, that because he still has one year of Jr eligibility left, Hamilton is no an option. They either need to keep him in Montreal or ship him back to junior.

I am not disagreeing, just looking for clarification, he can't be assigned to Hamilton? So if he makes the openning day roster and after a month, just isn't clicking, the Habs HAVE to send him back to the Q? I reiterate, not arguing, just not understanding.

Heet- he can play 10 games in Montreal. If he plays 11, they need to sign him and keep him. But no, because he still has Junior eligability, he cannot be sent to Hamilton. It is either Montreal or Junior.

Then I say give him his 10 games, and if he's anywhere near as good as what I observed, he'll stick. If not, send him back down and start him in Hamilton next year for seasoning.
I have now downloaded all my pics. Anyone who wants a look can send me a personal message.

That kind of seals his fate back to Juniors, doesn't it?

Why? As far as I'm concerned he's a top two line material now.
Give him ten days to prove it.
