I was fortunate enough yesterday to attend the Penguins mini camp in Moncton, NB. I spent a couple hours (geesh I hope my boss does not read this..I was supposed to be making sales calls) at the rink and watched the scrimmage. Let me first of all say that this team will suprise some people and make some waves. Will they get in the playoffs this year? No. Are they a potential future powerhouse? Definately!
Some observations:
Therrien is going with a line of Ryan Malone, Evengi Malkin and Marc Recchi as Center. One word. Wow!. I realize it is only a scrimmage but these guys dominated. Anyone who thinks that Malkin is overrated needs to seriously give their head a shake. This guy is the real deal. Recchi seems to be a natural fit between the two kids and the chemistry was instant. This will be a dominant line, especially since the opposition will be concentrating their efforts on stopping Crosby and putting their checkers against him. The addition of Malkin is huge
Fleury- is as solid a goalie as I have ever seen. Big, mobile, and fast. He has had the misfortune of playing on one of the worst defensive teams in the league and still shines. Would love to see him in a habs uniform. He made a couple saves yesterday that made me spill my beer..and that takes alot.
Ronald Petrovicki, an addition from Atlanta, played with Crosby on one wing with Jarku Ruutu formerly of Vancouver on his other side. Boy..can those guys fly!!
All in all a very tough practice and scrimmage. Lots of hits. Brooks Orpick is just plain nasty. They are still a few players short of making a run..but they are a team to watch.

Barry, Pens are my second favorite team and I'm really excited because I know they will grow together and be a serious team in a few years. With them, it's not a question of can they improve in the off season but when will they dominate. With Crosby, Malkin and Fleury, it's a certainty

That's for sure. I did not go to see them last night in their Halifax exhibitiion game (rather pricy), but it was good to see that in their 5-2 loss, both Penguin goals were scored by Halifax natives - Crosby and Steve Dixon.

Barry, the guys on FoxSportsNet - Pittsburgh, couldn't say enough glowing things about Staal. What were your thoughts on this kid. He looked nearly towering compared to everyone else on the ice. I get a little nervous thinking about a team that in very short order will have Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, all with a few years under their belts and then if Staal is the real deal. Good God in the morning.

To be honest I was so amazed at Malin and Crosby that I did not pay alot of attention to Staal. But what I saw he can fly and is big. This team WILL be the team of the future. You can bet on it.

The Penguins young talent certainly is impressive, yet there is anothr team that has some young talent that matches up preety well with the Pens and seems to be flying under the radar:the Blue Jackets. Zhederev (if they can resign him) Brule, Nash,Vyrbony upfront with Pascale LeClair in goal. They don't have the big stud dman as yet, but very quietly Mclean the club's gm has built up a great young talent base. He has started filling in the gaps a little with guys like Federov,Carter,Foote solid veteran talent. They may not be far away from making some noise themselves. Zhederev is one of the most exciting young players in the league and can match up one on one with anyone, Nash is and will continue to be one the most dominant goal scores in the league, and LeClaire may be the breakout goal in the league this season. Who knows the Blue Jackets may become the up and coming team in the west to match up with the Pens. Nevr know how young talent fully develops, but certainly a team to watch.
