Ok,. I have pointed out where I feel the habs are weak and where we fall short. Having said that I think we will be a very exciting team to watch. Bob has built a team around speed which is a prime commodity in the new nhl. I feel we have string goaltending, some decent dmen and some kids with great wheels. Ribs may just surprise us all this year and lets hope he does. Like I said before, if he cant put the biscuit in the net playing between world class players like Samsonov and Kovalev, he may as well hang em up. I think he will step up, I really do.
Early indications are that Saks does not look out of place at all and is in great shape. I still look for Bobby G to make a deal sometime this winter for a strong centerman and I think he will. But they will spend a month or 2 just letting the dust settle on the team and on other team's cap issues. I think Ryder and Higgins are going to have great years. If we can get some timely contributions from the 3rd line we will have good balance. Can't wait.

good poditive post barry , i was worried as most people about this team with the holes we have , but i think they are small holes not gapping holes . our centers are good not great , our d the same ,the goaltending should be great/steady if not spectacular, the things about this team i like are the youth and the speed . this team will be fun to watch as you say and if the stars align for us as they have been for other teams in recent times we may make some noise this year beside the constant whinning from some board members here.
I triple that motion... now if only I could watch them! I think this year will also be the break-out year for Komisarek who is fast becoming one of my fav Habs. Yes, we need one more all-around guy who can really move the puck, but I actually like our D over-all. Rivet, Bouillon, and Dandenault are complete rearguards with no glaring weaknesses to their game. Mrakov has the ability and hopefully soon the will to be a #1 guy. Komi is going to be Foote. And then there is Souray... I see him as the prime guy to be moved unless he can suddenly learn to be mobile and think quickly. He would be very good to have if paired with a skilled, quick partner, but we just don't have that amongst our RD. Streit and Cote provide solid depth and Streit just may be a sleeper. I hope Plekanec and Perez can step-up and give us 3 lines that can really fly. It is time they show why they were highly-regarded prospects.
great posts gentlemen lets hope the ghosts on Huet's mask are the ghosts that have helped us shine from the forum in the past.....here is to a good year and some more positive posts
Good point. The speed will be exciting, and hope Carbonneau brings back the forechecking we saw under Julien. The young guys should be more mature this time around. I'm looking forward to seeing if Perezhogin makes a big improvement. Same with Komisarek.
To be realistic...I've mentioned, we have marginally improved because our rookies are adapting and we'll have stronger goaltending all season. Mostly though because Carb and Muller will really help motivate and give them solid leadership. Yes they'll be fun to watch. They'll still scratch to make the playoffs because of what other teams did to improve in the off season.
As per every season, I can't wait to watch them battle...win or lose, it'll be exciting!

I think you bring up a very good point Plouf. Julien and Gainey had very different coaching styles. Although some players complained that CJ did not allow the dmen to move up with the puck (Markov), he did at least have a 2-1-2 system which, when you have gusy with wheels,. is fun to watch. Gainey was more conservative and seemed content to trap with a 1-2-2. I felt that, although a safer system, it did not utilize team speed..and was as thrilling to watch as paint drying. Carbo has already indicated he will use a strong forecheck. Of course as a coach, you need to instill the work ethic to make this system effective. It takes much more effort to play a 2-1-2 because you need your forwards going in hard all the time and coming back hard.
It will be exciting hockey.

I actually think the Habs will have that work ethic needed for the forechecking system. Even soft little guys like Perezhogin and Ribeiro showed me something against Carolina. Bonk, Begin, Plekanec, Koivu, Murray, Higgins...there's lots to work with. Samsonov has wheels, as does Johnson (if I remember correctly - I don't know him that well - playing in Phoenix will do that).
I'm not so sure about Ryder. He's an awkward (though underrated) skater but has the ability to use his body well if he tries. I wish he would do that more. He's not really your ideal forechecker, but he puts the puck in the net, and we need that big time.

I would still like to see some more size up front. I think we are big enough on defence and Komi gets bigger every year..and plays meaner. But we still need more size up front to go with the speed. If I have a complaint with our forwards it would be that we have too much of all the same thing. Small, speedy guys. As much as speed helps in an agressive forecheck system, you also need guys that intimidate a bit and hit. We have that in the Begin/Downey line. But keep in mind those guys are not on the ice much. Samsonov is not gonna intimidate an opposition dman into coughing up the puck. He may make him rush his pass a bit but he will certainly not punish him.
Right now, Montreal just does not have a very intimidating team physically to play against, so they will have to try to intimidate with speed. A nice strong power forward and/or a big center would add some of that intimidation. Even though the new nhl is all about speed, you still need to be able to scare the beJesus out of your opponent now and then. In the meantime I like Carbs approach of working with what he has..speed.
