Flyers sign Kesler to offer sheet

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed Vancouver Canucks restricted free agent forward Ryan Kesler to an offer sheet.  Sources tell TSN the deal is worth $1.9 million for one season.

The Vancouver Canucks have seven days to match this offer, but if they choose to walk away for financial reasons, they will receive a second round draft pick.

The Canucks only have about $2.3 million to spend under the salary cap, making Kesler's offer sheet difficult to match unless they make a trade.

The Flyers, however, are not in much better shape.  If the Canucks don't match the offer sheet, Kesler's contract would push them nearly to the top of the salary ceiling.

The last NHL offer sheet came in 1998, when the Carolina Hurricanes offered Sergei Fedorov a six-year contract worth $28 million.  The Detroit Red Wings matched it.

In 82 games with the Canucks last season, the 22-year-old forward tallied ten goals, 13 assists and 79 penalty minutes.  Kessler was drafted by the Canucks in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

That Fedorov offer had more to it then it looks like on paper. I believe they was also a 10 million bonus or near that amount for a Stanley Cup win. Which of course for Detriot was not out of the realm of imposibilities for Detriot but for Carolina was not very likley. And of course in 98 who won the Cup?

This is going to happen more and more often in the capped of NHL because now other teams can make offers which will push the original team over the Cap. Therefore giving the origianl team to accept the measly second round draft choices or sometimes for bigger contracts multiple first round draft choices. Since they cant risk being over the cap and don't want to be forced to dump another integral part of their team.

 I agree this will happen more but it's dirty bussiness! If the GMs had more respect for each other, then they wouldn't be their own worst enemy. Teams will purposely leave Cap room for a player they like and know they will be a free agent than pounce on them in the off season when the team can't sign their player. There may even be tampering involved. I could just imagine that a GM would say.."hey, don't sign with your team because in the off season I'll offer you this much".

Just thought of something. I recall some rumors about Philly being intrested in Anson Carter and with Kesler about to be signed for 1.9 by the Canucks they can no longer pursue Carter therefore Clarke may be able to pick him up. Also imigane the precedent if Kesler and his 10 goals deserve 1.9 mill how much would other young players warrent using this case as precedent in arbitration?

Don't forget, Primeau's $3 million is going to come off their salary cap.  They will have room for Carter and Kesler.

Actually my opinon is... IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!! For too many years the NHL GM's have been "an old boys club" where they all look after each other. You don;'t think that there is collusion amongst all the GM's in that league? Sure there is. That is why this type of thing never happens. And it is about time that these guys had to be more on their toes. If the loophole is there I say use it. If the league feels it is a problem then close the loophole.

The cap forces today's GM to be more creative in many areas. Although not a fan of Bobby Clarke, what is it with these "unwritten rules"??? The name of the game is winning and hockey is a dirty business. I say do what you need to do to win. Just ask any coach who has been canned.

Apparently, Bob Clarke was listening:

For all the NHL general managers, or anyone else for that matter, who are enraged over the Philadelphia Flyers' offer sheet to Vancouver's Ryan Kesler, Flyer GM Bob Clarke has a message:

"I don't give a (expletive deleted) if nobody likes me, I could care less," Clarke told TSN. "But they shouldn't be getting mad at me, I didn't put the (offer sheet) rule in the collective bargaining agreement. If they're mad, they should call Gary Bettman and complain to him. Get mad at Gary Bettman. He's in charge of the rules, not me. I didn't realize there were some rules we're not allowed to use."

Clarke said he knew when he extended the one-year, $1.9 million offer sheet to the 22-year-old Kesler, a 10-goal scorer last season who was on the verge of re-signing for half that much with the Canucks, that he would incur the wrath of his brethren.

Too bad, Clarke said.

Related Info

"I'm trying to make my team better," Clarke said. "There's a rule that says we can put out offer sheets. So I did it. You know, it's funny, they made new rules so we're operating in a system where we all get to spend the same amount of money. Philadelphia and Detroit can't spend any more than Nashville or Anaheim. Those are the rules. We all live by them. No one can accuse Philadelphia or Detroit of spending more money than everyone else now. But when I go and use a rule that is there, everybody is all over me about it."

if(!sops){if(p.sops){var sops=p.sops;}else{var sops="";}}
if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;}
if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(!dUnitSuper)||(dUnitBox)){place300x250();}}

And Clarke was just getting warmed up.

"To me, our thinking is completely backward," Clarke said. "I lost Kim Johnsson to (unrestricted) free agency because the Minnesota Wild gave him $4.8 million. Well, the Flyers had to give (revenue sharing) money to Minnesota and other teams and I don't like that but it's the rules. And then Minnesota takes that money and signs my player and there are no rules to say I can keep him if I match. I wish I had all the options with Kim Johnsson that Vancouver has with Kesler. They can match and keep him or they can let him go. It's up to them."

As for those who suggest Clarke should not have tendered the offer sheet because Vancouver will match and the market value for 22-year-old, 10-goal scorers will be inflated, Clark took umbrage with that.

"Sure, in the old system, teams always matched offer sheets but this is a new system with a salary cap and you have to make hard decisions that affect your team not just for this year but the years to come, too," Clarke said. "I don't know that Vancouver will match. Maybe we get the player. That's the idea. It's a few days to training camp, the player wasn't signed and we have a need for that type of player in our organization. Why wouldn't I try it? Everyone says it's causing salaries to go up. That's crap. We've all got salary caps and if it is true it drives up salaries, well, doesn't Boston signing (Zdeno) Chara to a $7 million deal or Chicago signing (Martin) Havlat to a $6 million deal drive up salaries, too? Give me a break.

"A lot of guys in this league like the rules when it suits them and they don't like them when it doesn't. Too bad for them. I'm just playing by the rules that are there. To be honest, I'm surprised more teams aren't doing it.”

Heeter- ya..Bobby and I got together for a cool one last night hehe. barry33 rests his case though. Clarkey is absolutely correct and I say more GM's need to use it. Like I said, the cap is a different era and he is absolutely 110% correct. It calls for tough decisions. Mark this down. This is the ONLY time I have ever agreed with Clarke.

Every team has the same money to play with. It is all about Cap Management. IF the Canucks lose Kesler, the Flyers give up a second rounder. Not bad compensation for a guy who is little better than a role player. And to those who say that moves like this drive up salaries..BS. Clark is absoluetly right in saying that it is the Chara and Marc Savard signings (not to mention a 15 year deal to Dipitiful) that are driving up salaries. Full kudos to Clarke for adjusting to the new NHL.

HOW dare he!?

It will be a factor in driving up salaries. My point I guess (aside from the one on top of my head) is that it is not THE main factor. I feel that Clarke is right in saying that the loophole should not be there to begin with (Helloooo Gary Bettman) and that if GM's want to start pointing fingers then point them at some of the ridiculous salaries STILL being offered to UFA's. Clarke makes VERY good points.  EVERY GM whined at the Philly and Detroits before the cap era, saying they spent too much. Now everyone is on an even playing field and because of that, it will get a bit nasty. As far as Higgins and Ryder asking for more money..so be it. Every GM has the same amount of cash to spend and it will be the ones who manage it the best who will comeout on top.

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed Vancouver Canucks restricted free agent forward Ryan Kesler to an offer sheet.  Sources tell TSN the deal is worth $1.9 million for one season.

The Vancouver Canucks have seven days to match this offer, but sources have told TSN it is absolutely certain the Vancouver Canucks will match the offer sheet.

Canuck GM Dave Nonis is refusing comment today, but the Canucks say there's likely to be a news conference on Wednesday, at which time Nonis will address the Kesler issue.

The Canucks have seven days to decide whether to match but a source close to the Canucks said the decision to match Philadelphia's offer sheet has already been made and Kesler will remain a Canuck, earning $1.9 million, which is more than twice what he was being offered by Vancouver.

As soon as Vancouver matches, NHL rules prohibit Kesler from being traded by Vancouver for a period of one year.

Barry...I agree he can do it but it's dirty. Dirty because the offer sheet is so over inflated that Canucks don't have chance to match and why would they be so stupid? Clarke is a loser and an idiot! This will bring about more collusion every year and that's scummy for the league as a whole.

Ab- no one hates Bob Clarke more than me. He has no class. But liek he said, he is not there to win a popularity contest (thank God). He is there to do what it takes to win hockey games. That is what he is paid to do. Unfortunately as I said, with the new cap era, this is simply the first cannot shot of the changing times.

One thing you can say about Clarkey. He manages just like he played. Anyone remember the time he broke Karlomov's ankle in that exhibition game against the Russians? Obviously he is the same off the ice as he was on it lol.

Clarke is an idiot and this move will help him no more than playing his own second round rookie for alot less money and more Cap room. Why not give his own skilled rookies a chance in his own system? His problem is he historically doesn't know how to produce from with in. He placed a bunch of talent in one basket and handed them over for Lindros. If only he would of had that talent which included Forsberg then, he may of won by now!
