From all reports coming from the Habs rookie camp, undrafted Cedric Desjardins has been vastly outplaying number 5 overall pick Carey Price. Even though Desjardins is a tiny guy and the nets are oversized in this tournament (another Gary Bettman brainstorm). Price even complained about the size of the nets after being shelled for 3 goals on 6 shots while Desjardins, when asked, replied "I did not really think about it".

I saw Desjardins in the Q last year and he is a good goalie. Kudos to the hab brass for signing him. More indication to me that we totally wasted a number 5 pick. Desjardins has been signed to an AHL contract and will probably fight for the backup spot behind Danis.

Has anyone seen Halek play net- apparently he is better than Danis. As far as Desjardins goes, he was offered a try-out with Chicago but turned it down before accepting acontract with the Habs. It will be interesting to see if Habs can get away without the services of Ab, which will open up a spot for anyone of our young minders.

Good point...I have heard goo dthings about Halek and if Cedric can get a spot in Hamilton then that makes room for Danis in Montreal. If I am Yan Danis I am pushing real hard for a "play me or trade me" in Montreal this year. No use toiling away in Hamilton forever.

Before Huet came along most memebers of this board were crying for CJ to play Danis and he was respectable when he did. What I mena by play me or trade me is that this is a year that Danis has to do something less he be stuck in Hamilton forever. You can very easily be lost in the shuffle in the minors.

As for giving Price a chance of course he gets a chance. He has to at a number 5 pick. But let;s face it. BG was about the only one in the hockey world who thought that Price was a good pick at number 5.

Certainly a stupid #5 pick! But hey, Gainey has to do it his way! How about the smooth skating defensmen Luke Bourdon..anyone? I guess Gainey thought he was already really deep at defense and really needed a goalie!

Would not go so far as to say that only Gainey saw Price as worthy as a number 5 pick overall, or that it was a stupid draft selection. Prior to that draft Price was rated by various scouting reports as a top 10 pick and arguably the top goalie available. In a survey of scouts Bob Mckenzie indicated that Price was ranked number 7 overall in the draft. Trevor Timmins has repeatedly spoken very highly of Price and the skill set he has to be a top teir goalie. Timmins has stated that Price doesn't get rattled, reads and reacts very quickly has a deceptively quick glove hand, and in front of a very weak Tri City team last year played very well. He also had to adjust to playing with NHL size equipment last season.

Would agree though that either Brule or Bourdon would have better addresed the Habs more pressing short term needs (goal scoring and another quality defenceman). The Habs probably will not get another top 5 pick overall for sometime and to take a goalie that high (recent histroy shows that only Luongo drafted so highly-has worked out) is a high risk strategy. In hindsight, it appears at the present time Tuukka Rask drafted 21st overall is developing as the better goalie selection. Nonetheless, goalies do take time to develop, and Timmins has made some very good selections so it may be too early to judge whether the Price draft was a mistake. Presumably, if Latendresse keeps developing he will offset the Price selection, as the Habs were able to grab him late in the second round, and that now looks like a bargin.

Overall, the Habs do have a couple of potentail blue chip dmen in Emelin and O'Bryne, and of course they do have the likes of Grabovsky,Kotsitsyn upfront. Perhaps Gainey saw weakness in the organization in terms of goaltending and felt Price was the best available asset to select. Overall, the selection is very debatable.
