Hey ScottishHab, I keep forgetting to ask you this. I've been working lately for the Halifax 2014 Commonwealth Games Candidate City Society. As you likely know, the 2014 Commonwealth Games will be awarded next year to either Halifax, NS (aka New Scotland), Abuja, Nigeria, or - - - - - - - Glasgow, Scotland!
While the Commonwealth Games inspire a great big yawn in most of the world, there has been much buzz about this in Halifax in recent months - some positive, much negative (we're too small, it's too expensive, etc.).
I was wondering what type of scuttlebutt you were hearing and reading in Glasgow - if any at all?

To be honest, there isn't an awful lot of interest here as far as I can tell.It has the same level of complaint about costs- especially the amount that is being spent on the bid if we don't win.The plan here is that the Games would regenerate one of the worst areas of the city which should have been done anyway.
There is a feeling that London having the Olympics in 2012 will probably result in the Comm.Games going elsewhere.
As I say- nobody is all that bothered either way!!!
It's the same dynamic here - too costly, some say, and the new stadiums and living areas being built in a non-prime part of town (which is a good thing, I suppose). The one difference is that in a small city like Halifax it is a big deal, and most people have an opinion on the matter.
I think the political bent would be to stage the Games in Nigeria, since they have never been held in Africa, but I'm not sure if there's enough money over there to pull it off to the specs of the CGF.
I had forgotten about London getting the Olympics in 2012. Halifax could well be the default position! On the other hand, Melbourne got the Games in 2006, only 6 years after Sydney, just up the coast, held the Olympics. So you never know.
One thing I do know is the amount of money being spent over here for the bid - but I'm not allowed to say.
