Bruins sign Bergeron to a 5 year deal for 23.75 million, or 4.75 million a year, the same as Koviu. Although it seems like a lot of dough for a 21 year old with only two seasons in the league, and three years removed from eligibility for arbitration, it is a smart move by the Bruins. With the continued salary escalation in the league, that annual salary may look like a bargin in three years. Finally some teams are getting it right: identify your core players lock them up to a long term deal and pay for what they will do in the future, as opposed to signing an inflated contract to a player past his prime and rewarding him for what he did do, and not what he will do in the future.
Bergeron had a 31 goal 73 point season last year and will only get better. For the first three years the Bruins may be over paying, but by the time he would be eligible for arbitration, this existing contract will be a bargin, just look at the deals Havlat and Gomez were awarded. The Bruins recognized the value of Bergeron and locked him up and they also recognized the foolish amount the arbitrator awarded Tannabe and walked away from it. The Blue Jackets were correct to sign Nash to a long term deal as well, in the present financial climate locking up good young players may seem premature but it is more palatable than losing that player to free agency or on the losing side of an arbitration deal.

A steal for the Bruins in my opinion..31 goals and 71 points?!?!?? This guy is only 21 and will be a force for many years...the comparisons to Koivu I will leave to others.

I think it's a good move too, but there is some gamble in it. That's why they were able to get the guy so cheap. The guy is a good bet, but still unproven....scoring points in meaningless games for a lousy team is one thing. Let's see how he performs when the chips are down (cf. Joe Thornton)....
Im telling you all, with Chara, Savard, and bergeron not to mention Boyes and Sturm The Bruins are going to have to be reckoned with. I bet they will be the most improved in the NHL I HATE THEM

I agree to a certain point but everyone said the same thing about the Penguins last year too. I'll wait until we are 20 games into the season before I make my asessment.

They actually did some good things in off season especially adding Savard and Chara. Savard will take the load off Bergeron and Chara will add that horse type defenseman that can log big minutes. They will be much better than last season and mostly because of Chara. Love him or hate him, the guy is hard to play against. Similer to Pronger.
