ok, I'm a month ahead of myself here, but who do you think has a chance of making the team? Out of the prospects I mean?
Obviously in goal we'll have Huet and Aebischer
On D we've got Bouillon injured, so we're looking at Souray, Komisarek, Markov, Rivet, Dandenault and probably Streit. After that I'd assume it's Cote if they're going with 7. I don't see any of the young guys having a hope of making the roster: not O'Byrne. None of them.
Centres will be Koivu, Ribeiro, Plekanec, Bonk. If Koivu's not ready my guess would be Lapierre. He makes a decent 4th line centre. Chipchura is probably not ready. I don't think we'll see a lot of Murray, Begin or Higgins at centre....yet.
On the wing, we've obviously got Ryder, Kovalev, Higgins, Johnson, Begin and Samsonov. Plus at least two of Downey, Murray and Perezhogin. Who else will make it? If the Habs carry one young forward early on, who will it be? Probably it's between Latendresse and Andrei Kostitsyn. My guess is Andrei will get his chance this year. He's the kind of guy who could explode.
So for my money, assuming Koivu's healthy, our only new players will be Andrei Kostitsyn and J.P. Cote.
I think that the picture will become more clear once the rookie camp starts. Its easyto talk about these players as we remember them, but what we should also remember is that when you are so young, you can make big strides in the offseason. So untill we see what all these guys have been up too during the offseason, we will not be certain how might make the team.
Latendress is a perfect example of that. no one expected him to even get pastt he rookie camp, but he almost made the team. Aperantly he got very out of shape after the come down from that experiance, so hopefully he put in the work this off season and will be primed to make another push to make the roster.
Also i wouldnt be surprised to see Higgins at centre, possibly between Kovy and Samy. he is the guy who will be able to stand in front of the net and pick up the garbage while kovy controles the puck and samy flies around. This is obviously not certain, but i think it could work, especially because higgins is a natural centre, and now has jarvis and carbo to teach him the intrecasies of being an nhl centre.
I don't think we will see Higgins centring one of the top two lines early in the season, unless there are injuries. Ribeiro will be given another shot, and his new contract was pretty much a public statement in that regard. Plus Higgins and Koivu seemed to have real chemistry as linemates. Plus we have Pleks and Bonk.
