yes it would be that bad , ryder has missed 2 games in 2 years , dumont has never played a full season , dumonts high points is 53 , ryders low is 55 , he played all/most last season with bad back , dumont is older ,and as i read on another board if his name was pete dumars we would not even be looking at him .
Yes, there's not much to choose between them statistically, but I'd stick with Ryder for a bunch of reasons:
He's the "devil we know".
He's younger.
He's more durable.
He's more of a goal-scorer.
He's from Newfoundland!
Personally, I'd love to see Dumont come to Montrreal - it's refreshing to see a player actually wanting to come here. But not at the expense of Ryder.
My hope is that Gainey can dump Bonk somehow to free up the money. Johnson can provide what Bonk did and then some while we would have three pretty good right wingers.
IF I had to chose I would take Ryder for sure. Health reasons alone. But I think Dumont is an all around better player, plus he is a potential 30 goal man too.
not to pick bones but dumont has been in the league for 6 years and his top goal output was 23 , ryder has topped that both years in the league , if dumont is a potential 30 goal man thatn ryder is a potential 40 , and as far as him being better all around , not in my opinion , hes a minus 32 career , while ryder is plus 5 , the only this dumont has over ryder is speed , id take ryder anyday of the week.

Good points, and I don't think Ryder is a potential 40 goal man, I think he is a potential 50 goal man. Maybe I have been swept up in the whole Dumont thing.
I agree but I still cringe when I see him skate down the wing when there's open ice.... I think most of us accept North American players with limited talent who can fill the net.
Question? Was there ever a European who was a top goal scorer, who couldn't skate?
Selanne=top goal scorer, great skater / Kurri=top goal scorer, great skater. I doesn't have much relevance, just thinking out loud...

Off topic but this thread title reminded me of a joke I heard once..."Who is bigger? Mr. Bigger or Mr. Bigger's baby?" Answer- "Mr. Bigger's baby because he is a little Bigger". Ya I know..summer is getting wayyyy too long.
