Wierd Rumour- Malkin to Mtl
Permalink Closed

Take this for what it is..a rumour. from Team 990...but rumour has Souray, Ryder, Ribiero Abeschier  and a first round pick next year to the Pens for Malkin. I would take this deal. Can you imagine Malkin between Samsonov and Kovalev? The other thing is that all 4 players are on the last year of their deals in Montreal..who is to say you can get them to re sign? Clears up cap space big time...I say take it.  Lets face it..Ribs is gone after this year. In all reality, Souray probably is too. Abby does not want to be Huets backup (although he would end up backing up Fleury in Pens land) and Ryder and Gainey do not seem to see eye to eye. As for a first round pick..big deal..they are a crap shoot, especially where the habs pick. The one player that would really be hard to replace would be Souray. The rest are expendable.

No..apparently he left his team when they went to FInland for training camp last weekend. He has a Canadian passport. But yes, although Malkin has not played a game in the NHL, he is the real deal. Fast, shifty, and very strong on his skates with a bit of a mean streak. Don't forget the connection as well between the habs and Pens with Therrien coaching and Andre Savard. So you would call up Danis to replace Abby, you would sign Dumont to replace Ryder (dont forget Malkin only gets a rookie salary), you then need to find a dman to replace Shelly, either through a trade or signing. Oh ya..and Malkin would TRY to replace Ribs at center.

All these players for a guy who hasn't played one game in the Nhl.  I know just call me skeptical.  I know we are not giving up much but that would leave us with quite a few holes to fill.

Ya..it is a gamble and given the fact that Gainey is not known to gamble I say it is a farce. As far as the holes go, I think they could be filled through the cap room he would have after eliminating those 4 salaries. But I think the chances of that trade happening would be comparable to the chances of me wearing a thong at the beach this weekend.

First - Malkin is as close to a 'sure thing' as is possible!

His comparators are a young Mats Sundin and Vinny LeCavalier.

Any time you can land such a player...you do it!!!

Honestly...And-o wouldn't even hesitate on this one...Ryder can be replaced...as can Ribs and Abby...Souray's come and go as well....but a Malkin is a rare find!!!

...no way is Pitt this foolish though...no way!!!

Great.  Now I don't know if I want the trade to happen.  I would hate to see Sheldon go, but, probably only for about Malkin's first minute of ice time.  If it seems too good to be true, than it probably is.  WOW, I can't let myself believe that this could happen....  I need a drink .

I'd rather have Crosby to be honest. And what was PJ's argument?

Actually PJ said he would take the deal..the only one he wished they could keep was Souray because of his role in the dressingroom.

Somethign I don't get however, is that why does malkin have to hide right now. If it is to avoid being forcefully taken back to russia, or even killed by the mob. What is going stop them once they find out where he is at?

Geez Jay...get your head outta your monitor for the afternoon and go down to the library and read-up on your post-WWII history!

Russia ain't like North America at all!  Organized crime...black market...and rampant corruption are EVERYWHERE!!!

Malkin is basically just 'property' in Russia (VALUABLE property)...and his 'owners' want him back!  As is, they could likely take him according to law...soon though, once the paperwork is done...he is worth nothing to them!!!

And-o, I don't really get what you are saying in your post. The only part I do know is that you think I'm not well versed on either world politics, and/or history (which I haved majored in University).

Russia ain't like North America at all

Uhhh, when did I say it was?

Organized crime...black market...and rampant corruption are EVERYWHERE!!!
When did I say otherwise?

Malkin is basically just 'property' in Russia (VALUABLE property)...and his 'owners' want him back!

Obviously!!!! However the Russian mob has their fingerprints everywhere.

they could likely take him according to law...soon though, once the paperwork is done...he is worth nothing to them!!!

Malkin is in his rights as per Russian labor law to give his 2 week notice. The Russian hockey team has nothing to bring him back.

Also, you don't need to lecture me on Russia, I've been there, I know what it's like!!!!

Geez Jay...get your head outta your monitor for the afternoon

I'm on my labtop at the airport, I'm catching a flight to LA. Where are you at? Work?

Lets break this down. THis trade would make more sense if it was just Ryder, Souray, and a first round pick. IT can be easily spotted as a fake considering that one of the only reasons that the Pens can afford to get rid of Malkin is beacause they are set at center with Crosby and Staal. Ribs would be even worse in Pitts than here, unless they kept Staal down another year. Also Aebischer doesn't fit in Pittsburghs plans, they have their goalie in Fluery.

But it can be looked at another way..Fleury is young. Last year's backup Caron is gone. Staal will probably stay down another year, Robs has one year left on his contract. Therrien likes Ribs having coached him. But who knows..at any rate it makes for good speculation on a slow summer hockey day lol

Whether a trade rumour is based in fact or someone dreamed it up doesn't make it any less intriguing.  For those who think the Habs overpay - remember the Lindros deal and consider what we'd give for Crosby.  Malkin is that kind of guy.  Also, for those who think Pittsburgh would be nuts, they'd easily come out a much better team.  Remember, they suck.  And you can't have a team with all rookies/sophmores and win.  They need leadership and mentors.  So, they get that too.  I think it a win-win, more for the Habs because of salary dump and superstar potential return.  Like And-io said - when you have a chance to get that kind of talent, you have to make it happen.

I'm not really buying into the rumor though....but, if one person can make it happen, its Gainey

Fleury is garbage. He has been garbage ever since he blew the World Junior finals.  The trade would make very little sense if it only involved Ryder, Souray and a 1st round pick.  Malkin is worth much more.

If BOB can pull it off and then sign Dumont, his legacy would be set in Montreal. C'MON BOB!!!

Lets not forget this..the Pens are for sale. They want a new arena. Even with Malkin, they are still a very young team and are a few years away from contending. YOu add guys like Souray, Ryder, Ribs (3rd line Ribs) and Abby and you become competitive NOW. To me the deal makes total sense for both teams. And the PEns have teh cap room to take on those guys.

Like Barry said, this rumour is something to stir the pot on a summer day where nothing is happening. That's it, that's all.

I think that's a great point - Pittsburgh needs to attract a buyer and what better way than to win games.  Whether it's BS or not, it's intriguing!  We all know that the Russians will go after PIT for compensation but imagine if the NHL had to stand up for the Habs!

Gainey is no where near this rumour and doesn't want to get his clean conservative mits in a controversy. The only pot he's stirring is his chicken noodle soup.
