Komisarek leaving???
Permalink Closed

According to Eklund over at hockeybuzz.com the hot rumor has Montreal sending Komisarek to the Islanders possibly in an attempt to free up some money to sign Anson Carter or JP Dumont. I'm not so sure I like this idea as Komi was one of our better blueliners last year. What does evryone else think?

this is a quote from hockeybuzz.com.....

Hot off the Rumor Mill. Word that the Islanders are trying to get local defenseman, Mike Komisarek from the Canadiens. Word is that the Canadiens may be freeing up some money for either Carter or Dumont...my guess is Dumont. Komisarek was a first round pick and an out-and-out star at U of Michigan...He hails from West Islip, on Long Isl

Personally I think this would be a HUGE mistake. The only way I would make this deal would be to get the center we desperately need or to get another dman. We are thin on defence especially with the Cube down for awhile. Would I like to have Dumont or Carter? Of course I would. But they do not address our most pressing need, that being up the middle and on the blueline.

Doesn't sound like we'd free up much room? Komi can't be making that much. And why would you trade a younger 1st rounder that you know will be good to make room to get an okay and older 3rd rounder type? We'd really need to get something good from NYI - like future 1st rounders or hot prospects....

If this rumor is true I wish that Milbury was still the GM. He has a way of dealing that falls into a class all his own.

Couldn't agree more!  Komisarek really came on last year, and was playing very well at the end of the year.  And as FIgaro mentioned, his salary was not big, so the differential with someone like Dumont would make the cap space tighter.  Now if Bonk were leaving, that would be another story.

Right now Gainey does have the cap room anyway..at least temporarily. The Cubes slary will not count against the cap as long as he is hurt. If Gainey knows something inside as well as Koivu (ie 20 games), then his salary does not go against the cap either until he is back. What that does is buy Gainey time to deal away cap space. Besides all that. he does not have to be under the cap until the season opens.

Dumb rumour. No way does BG give away a promising young defenceman for nothing. Why even go after Dumont anyways. IMO he's worse than Ribs and is asking more $...

If…IF…Gainey is considering parting ways with assets the caliber of Michael Ryder and/or Michael Komisarek than this indicates to And-o that…

A)  Gainey intends to soon address the main weakness of this team in a MAJOR way (we’re talk’in some serious blockbuster type deal).

OR

B)  Something is drastically wrong with Saku Koivu’s vision afterall (and Gainey is attempting to play-out his hand as a total bluff under the cover of Koivu’s silence).  Anyone think they have the ‘jam’ to play that hand without showing panic and/or fear???

(And-o is betting the proverbial farm on ‘A’)

Well, the numbers work - 20 games off Koivu's salary would equal $1.2 million; Komisarek must be somewhere around $800-900K, so the ~ $2 million freed up would buy us Dumont for a year.

Still, I hope that's not the plan (i.e. trading Komisarek, not acquiring Dumont, which I would like.)

Gainey wouldn't do this unless it was a part of a string of moves that would not bring Dumont and/or Carter. Komi has huge potential, and Gainey knows that, if he were to be traded, look for something good coming our way. I, however, do not think that this will happen.

Agreed Jay..the ONLY way BG makes this move is if it helps to directly address the center situation. Certainly not to free up a bit of cap space for a Dumont or a Carter.

The OTHER question that Gainey would need to answer if he is trying to get Dumont. Who, on the top 2 lines, are you going to get rid of to make room for Dumont? You cannot stick him on the 3rd or 4th line for 2 reasons. One, defence is not his game, and 2, you are not gonna stick a guy getting 2 million a year on the 3rd line. Higgins? Ryder? Kovalev? Samsonov? (assuming Dumont could play either wing). So play GM for a minute..who are you shipping out to make room for JP?

If anyone knows anything about BG is his regard for big defensemen.  Gee I gues playing with Robinson and Ludwig all those years had that effect on him.

Komi is staying.  Relax all.   Let the yahoos on Hockeybuzz talk.  That's all they can do.

this is a dumb rumor from a dumb site. if gainey really wanted dumont or carter all he have to do id drop bonk to waivers then the farm , instantly frees up enuf for either without disrupting the core of the team .

I pretty much figured this would be the overall consensus. I figured it was a real bonehead move on BG's part if he gave Komi away like that to free up space for Carter or Dumont but I just had to post it anyways to be sure.....

I agree, but remember, Bonk has to clear waivers, if he doesn't, we still pay half his salary, and at half his salary, he is a steal IMO.

Peart- have you ever noticed that anytime a Quebec born free agent becomes available there is a media frenzy of "He wants to play in Montreal", "He is all but signed"? How much have we heard about Anson Carter coming to Montreal? (and he has been on the market for ages).

NO way the Islanders, just signed Hill.  Which probably just cancelled their idea of trading for a d-man.  Can't see the Habs trading a young d-man who has improved every year and lets not forget defenseman take longer to mature than most forwards.  the habs are very deep on the point, which makes this rumuor even more laughable

Not a chance, depite the obvious, young, big and strong, and a future star.....unrestricteds are worth more under the new system because of the perpetual nature of their contract and the limit on salary.

Komi is not going anywhere

Anson Carter?  Why not go for Anson Williams?  Every team needs a Potsie to piss in.

Enough said..  Pay no attention to Eklund, he knows as much as about Hockey rumours as my dog and I don't have a dog.
