I think that was a natural progression for those of us of a "certain age". Beliveau was every Hab fan's favourite player back in my youth, and when he retired and Lafleur started, it was a natural thing to have him (Lafleur) assume the mantle of favourite.
That it took three years for Guy to get it all together was very frustrating - but he was sure worth the wait!

Hey Plouf
One of my greatest nights was spent sitting in the Deja Vu bar after a Habs/Flyers game drinking with Chelly. Ludwig, Roy and Svoboda were also there but I sat with Chelly - I asked him about some infamous incidents he had as a US Olympic team player - I won't revisit them here.
I told him Rick Green and I were in the same kindergarten class (true) - and when i mentioned he was a better skater back then - what happened? - he spit the swig of beer right out of hs mouth from laughter.

Was there ever a greater voice for an announcer than Claude Mouton? Saying that sure makes me miss the days of Dick Irvin and Danny Gallivan and of course hearing Roger Doucet's rendition of the National Anthem. Heck....I knew the Canadian National Anthem before I knew my own.....
Favorite all-around Hab is Guy Carbonneau. Favorite Hab because of the pain he inflicted upon my least favorite team (Bruins) is Mike McPhee. The guy would score 9 goals a year, 7 of 'em against Boston, 6 of 'em would be late game scores to tie or win a game. Plus, he NEVER backed down from a beef.

I remember him sitting in the living room and I was too shy to meet him as I kep peaking around the corner from the kitchen. Finally I had the courage to go up to him. If I didn't know better, I would think I am suffering from a bit of melancholia, lol or whatever they call it.
You hit the bulleye on this one!! The most unique thing about games at the Forum, besides the hockey GREATS, has had to been the organ. I still kind of regret hearing pop music when the action stops.
...there really hasn't been a born-and-bread Hab worthy of the 'Hab legend' type status since Pat Roy left town...but And-o has a hunch that Chipchura (and maybe Higgins) could change all that!!!
I'm with you on the Chipchura and Higgins theory. Both golden! Can't wait to see them prove themselves.
best centerman would be jean belliveau even thought i have never seen him play the stats are there
best rw guy lafleur,,,,kovalev 2nd
best lw mats naslund,,,,always a money player in the playoffs,,quebec's worst nightmare
best defence,,,,larry robinson,andre markov
best goalie,,pat roy,,ken dryden
best scrapper,,,chris nilan
go habs go....cant wait to see who will surpass these guys?
Markov has a ways to go before he can be counted with the likes of Lapointe and Savard, Chelios and Langway, even Rick Green and Eric Desjardins...let alone pre-1970s guys. But the potential is there. Let's hope he keeps improving the way he has been.
