Belfour signs with FLA

SUNRISE, Fla. (CP) - Ed Belfour has signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers.

The 41-year-old goaltender became a free agent this summer when the Toronto Maple Leafs chose not to pick up an option on his contract.

Belfour has been recovering from back surgery in April and had previously been linked with the Detroit Red Wings.

In Florida, he'll likely split goaltending duties with Alex Auld.

Belfour's 457 career victories rank second in NHL history.

Keenan and Belfour together again.  If ever there were two guys that deserved each other...

Incentive loaded contract based not on dollars but on games played and wins...seems like a logical gamble to me.

A good move for Florida, I'd say. The jury is still out on Alex Auld. He's their starter right now, and I don't think there's any question about it. But Belfour provides stability in net. He has good veteran presence so Auld can learn from him, and need be, he can step in and contribute to the team. He's no longer an elite goalie, but he's not terrible, especially for a backup.

Uhmm..Eddie carried the Leafs lats year until he got hurt. Florida is paying him a whopping 750,000 a year. He is still one of the best in the league when he is healthy. Reports have it that he passed the physical with flying colors. He will go down there, play 30 games and act as a mentor to Auld. I would have taken that deal in a heartbeat.

If Eddie can deal with being a back-up, he will be huge for Florida.

come on barry , eddie carried the leafs , is that how he hurt his back , he was terrible last year , he had a few good games but most nights he was terrible , thats like saying jose carried us , i thought you were kidding but then you cameback with this statement "He is still one of the best in the league when he is healthy" and you cut down koivu , puts it in perspective now , unless you are truely kidding. his numbers from last year we'nt much better than theo and we shipped him out .
