MONTREAL - Michael Ryder is returning to Montreal.

Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced the one-year deal today. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

With Ryder signed, all Canadiens' players are under contract for the 2006-07 season.

Ryder, 26, completed the 2005-06 season, his second in the NHL, with a career-high 30 goals and 55 points in 81 games, and 40 penalty minutes.

The 6'0", 198-pound right-winger led the team in goals (30), power play goals (18), game-winning goals (6) and shots on goal (243). A native of Bonavista, Newfoundland, Ryder was a Canadiens' 8th round pick, 216th overall, at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

The signing avoids Ryders' arbitration hearing which was scheduled for Tuesday.

Good news for sure as it avoids the arbitration process which can have damaging effects on the relationship between management and a player.

I wonder if Gainey, seeing the recent arbitartion awards, forced him to come up with the 2.2 mil offer?

Is 2.2 what it is?  That is a great signing!!  I am glad to see Ryder back.  How good is it going to be hearing "Canadiens goal scored by number 73, Michael Ryyyyyder"

As for Ryder, I have a couple questions. Is he still injured and does he really smoke and is he too lazy to back check? Is fitness an issue with him? Are all the above rumours?

According to a co-worker, he said Ryder was a typical lazy newffy who can't skate worth a crap. AB had to tell the prejudiced loser off! I told him to try working with a herniated disc.

hey guys, Ive been coming to this site for years.  finally i decide to sign up. lol.  awesome page.

I Live in Bonavista NL, hometown of Michael Ryder.

He does not smoke, As for lazy, all of us can be that way sometimes.. I saw him when he was out here for a funeral and he says that his injury is coming along alot better.  So hopefully he'll be 100% come season time.  and sorry but that typical lazy newfie line wasnt all that nice..  Us newfies are some of the hardest working ppl out there..

Anyways, I'm glad to see Ryder signed and hopefully he'll have another 30 goal season or more.

Welcome Stead20! Here's hoping Ryder has a healthy season and puts all negative rumours to rest. As for NFLD, I have worked with a few and I have ran a camp there (can't think of the town name, SW-side) and I only have good things to say.

Hope to hear more from ya'!

Welcome abouard, Steader!  Great to see another NL'er among the crowd.  AB Habman certain had a right to tell that guy off - Albertans of all people should know Newfoundlanders are hard-working people - the tar sands are full of them!  (They're also the friendliest and most generous people in the world.)

Great to have an insider too - keep us updated on Bonavista's favourite son, please.

Great to hear that he is getting past his injury. That kind of injury could drag on!

To add to what Nil said. Newfandlanders are also fun to be around. I worked with one last year and he made it fun to go to work! Extremely funny and easy going!

Ryder did Gainey a favor as in my opinion he would have been awarded at least 2.5 through arbitration. All the arbitrator needs to look at are these stats. Cmon guys..lead the team in PP Goals, Game winners, Total Goals and SHots on . Goal Call him lazy if you want but what more do you want of the guy? A guy like Kovalev needs to hang his head in shame when he is outperformed by the Newfie on a consistent basis like this (and for half the money).
