Smith out Snow in as Islanders GM
Permalink Closed

Just when one would think the Islanders front office could not hit a new low, they do anyway. After 40 days as GM Neil Smith walks away from the job based on philosophical differences with the front office. The guy signs Simon,Witt,Potti,Silinger as free agents and then leaves. Certainly does not enhance Nolan's reputation as a gm killer. (Although don't know if he had anything to do with it). The Islanders hire Garth Snow withzero experience as the new gm. Islander fans better hope he does a better job as a gm than as a goalie, because he could not stop a beach ball. Given the mess in the front office I wonder if Barry33 still thinks they make the playoffs this year.

Nope..the firing of Neil Smith just did away with the slim chance they had of sneaking in this year...even with Ted Nolan as coach these gusy are sunk..Garth Snow as GM?!??!?? Geeshhhh Louise that is right up there with when the habs hired Rejean Houle

I was never very impressed with Neil Smiths abilities as a general manager because when he was with the Rangers all he seemed to do was throw money at players like Steinbrenner does with the Yankees and it got them pretty much nothing in return...not counting 1994 of course. Hiring Garth Snow to replace him was an even bigger bonehead move though as he has ZERO experience and I think whatever slim chance the Islanders had of making the playoffs just went out the window. Whats next on Long Island? Are they gonna promote the peanut vendor to an assistant coach?....

I feel sorry for Islanders fans. It sucks big time to have so much garbage happen to one team.

I am betting Teddy Nolan is wishing he was starting the season coaching Junior in Moncton again

Wright mentioned Ted Nolan's alleged reputation as a "GM killer".   Can there be something to that?

Actually this had nothing to do with Nolan. Wang wants to run the team like STeinbrenner runs the Yankees. He wants total control. The lastest rift came when Smith wanted to hire the equipment manager and Wang told him that should be Nolan's decision. Wang wants to run the team "by committee" and told Smith that when he hired him. I guess Smith must have been hoping he could change Wang's mind. The bottom line is that it appears that Wang wants a bunch of puppets and Snow, with zero experience would fit that bill. Snow is just happy and shocked to have a GM job in the NHL so will basically do whatever Wang asks of him.

Note- the first order of business for Snow will be finding a backup goalie to replace himself. Considering he only won 4 games last year he should not have a tough time

I just read that in the paper this morning.  This thing is looking more Mickey Mouse (Mickey Mouser?) every day.

How much power does Milbury still have? We can trade them.

Yann Danis (backup goalie) and Mike Ribeiro for

Mike York, Jeff Tambellini, Kyle Okposo, and their 2007 1st round pick (can anyone say Angelo Esposito??)

Why not just name him instead of making reference to his ethnicity?

Yes; that comment was not necessary.

Snow apparently interviewed for the job before Smith was hired and was actually one of the front runners.

Lafontaine will still be an advisor, just not in an official capacity.  There are rumblings that the Isles are trying to keep Patty's hands clean, as he may have had a part in Smith's firing.  As in Wang wanting Smith run all decisions through Wang and Lafontaine.

But how terrible could he be?  He has spent the last 10 years (NHL time) watching these players from ice level (albeit mostly from the bench) and he does have a Bachelors degree and a masters in Business.  Definately not my first choice, but there are worse out there, such as the aforementioned Houle.
