still one missing piece ... Gomez
Permalink Closed

While I could agree that the replacement of Zednik and Bulis with Samsonov and Johnson makes the habs a better team, BG still hasn't solved the problem at Centre.

The habs need a #1 Centre more than anything. Koivu is not a #1, and moreover is often injured, so he's better suited to #2 line duty. Pleckanez is still learning, so he's better suited for #3 line, and Bonk is now a defensive or checking line centre , so he can man the #4 line

So ... its time for BG to phone up Lou in NJ and make a deal for Gomez.  We can offer up Ribs, plus perhaps Streit or Bouillon, or if that doesn't work, maybe Ribs + Kostitson (or Perez') and a draft pick. In a weak moment, perhaps I'd even agree to throw in Souray (maybe Lou wants him back!)

Anyhow, imagine the habs lineup with Gomez as our #1 centreman

Kovalev  -   Gomez   -  Samsonov

Ryder  - Koivu   -  Higgins

Perez  -  Pleck'   -   Johnston

Begin   -   Bonk   -   Murray

The #1 line would be a bonafide #1 line on any team in the league!  And the best is we'd have real depth ... if Gomez goes down, Koivu steps up, or if Koivu is hurt, Plecki moves to the #2 line.

Come on Bob .... get on the phone!

I know its a long shot ... but its got to be done.  Without a #1 centre the habs will struggle (as they did in 2005/6 and the playoffs when Koivu went down)

Come on Bob .... are you surfing this board?

A few years back, I would have said, trading within a conference would never happen. however, remember last season's trade deadline? Not only were teams trading within their conference, but within their DIVISION while the playoff race was still hot in the west.
I actually could see MTL and NJ making a trade. All Lou has got to do is ask CJ who he liked from MTL and whom would also gel into the roster.

Gomez would be great, and in your post you did mention that if the Habs had Gomez they would have great depth down the middle, but what about on defence? Outside of Markov the Habs don't have a real quality puck moving dman. Despite the upgrades Gainey has made so far, if anything happens to Markov the Habs are in big trouble. Lookat the club's win loss record  from last season when Markov is in the lineup and when he is out of the lineup, it is not a good thing. The habs need another defenceman that has some of the same puck moving skills as Markov. Another complimentary dman would greatly enhance the teams offense. Markov has suffered from back spasms in the last two seasons and everytime he has gone out of the lineup the team has really suffered. At this point I would rather the team concentrate on another defenceman that can move the puck.

Heres a question, where do we get the money to sign gomez and replace Souray on D??  Do you want Streit as a regular go to guy, cause there is nothing on the farm NHL ready.

Striet could be in our top 6 next year.  Who on our teams d moves the puck better than him?

I could never understand this # 1 or # 2 center someone explain it to me PEEEEEEEEEZE.This is the N.H.L. if the coach asked one player to play nets they should be able to do it.So to go from the 1st line or the second line centerman how much of a change should that be?

Apperently according to Sportsnet, Gomez is heading to arbitration. Devils offered him 4 mill a season and his agent (and Dad) is demanding 5 million. If he is awarded 5 mill in arbitration Lamorillo will then look to trade him. In my opinion he is not worth 5 mill
