I agree but Shelley is looking at a West Coast team to be closer to his daughter so that limits Gainey as to who he can deal with. I don't see Anaheim as looking to dump anyone...especially with the signings they have made recently but I do have to admit that Selannes name keeps popping into my head every time I think about Shelley leaving town for the west coast. LA doesn't really have any player that I think would fit what Gainey is looking for but I guess the possibilities are intriguing to say the least. Time will tell........
I agree, I think shelly is a great leader and D-man but I also think the new NHL with all the speed has been very difficult for him. I think we will see guys like Boullion be very importnat pieces of a winning team.
Shelly is a great defensman but I would rather have 2 Boullion's than one Shelly. In other words I think the new NHL requires depth in all positions and the old thinking was all you need is 2 big time D-man... and go from their( look at Carolina...name their defense...Buffalo?...an example is that Campbell kid for Buffalo thriving in the new NHL).
Ryder...lead us in scoring and he does have a scary shot. But I find him slow at times( which is why the magic Ribby/Ryder combo did not work in the new NHL...too slow).
Why not package them up for either a great center or power forward type. Then sign a couple of "depth" D-man( 3/4/5th in terms of depth so I am not talking Simpson/Cote here...)
Still not sold on the whole Souray wanting out topic. I haven't heard any news of that anywhere, and when i do hear the news about him its how he loves the city and its fans. If he does want out, it would make the number of players wanting out jump again. Why does everyone want out and most turn down coming here. Montreal is the mecca of hockey and to play for the Habs would be a dream. Just don't understand it and it gets frustrating. Can't be the tax thing, these guys get paid enough not too worry about it. Let them try and get by on $1000 a week or less!
has anyone actually heard about him asking to be traded. the last i heard he wanted to stay and loves it here. im sure he would like to see his daughter more but until i see a statement from either bg. shelly or hes actually traded then i believe he wants to stay. as for trading ryder i dont like it , i dont think he is in gainey bad books , the way i see it gainey had to offer ryder a qualifying offer by july 1st in order to keep ryder as a hab. ryder had 2 choices accept it or go to arbitration , now does this mean he's pissed , no it means he feels he deserves more than a mil . i bet gainey signs him before the hearing. between 2-3 mil per .
Gainey told CJAD's Abe Heffner that Souray has asked to be traded. He loves Montreal, but he wants to be closer to his daughter. Aeb has also said he is not interested in being a co#1 and he will want to be moved. Gainey has said that he is happy with the current line-up, so I think we may see this group on opening night and if players aren't working out then we will see a deal, probably in a package with one or both of Souray/Aeb. Ribs, I am sure, will be on notice.
ok hab if you heard him say it i believe it but i hope your not saying afriend of a friend thought he heard bg. say that on some radio show . if its true then we could comply , he should have some value and the west coast team that gets him knows he will want to stay there because he asked to be traded there.
Well I can understand he wants to be closer to his family (daughter) but BG should not limit himself to the West Coast. It may be heartless but this is a business. BG may get a great offer from someone else, and in that case take it. To be limited to a certain geographical area may limit BG and I don't think he would put himself in that position.
If he isn't going to trade him to the West, then we might as well keep him. The only reason he would trade him is he can be close to his daughter. And Macneil, I looked for the link, but I can't find it right now, as it was from a few days ago. I didn't hear it, I read it. I guess there is a chance it could be false, but it has been going around the media circuit for ages now, as well.
If he truly wants out we should move him. Need to get a defenceman back though as it leaves a big hole on the defence. I am fine with Streit as a 7th guy, but not in our regular top 6.
He will be a UFA after this season, and if he really wants to be close to his daughter we will lose him for nothing.
I agree with Muller He Ryder has shown flashshes of tortoise from time to time greati n the slot and close on wing, but making a move and gaining the line looked rare at times for him...Allison may be the same come to think about it ...SOuray has been great and after what he went through as media revealed...would hate to see him go, but he is quite valuable in the league
Marleau would look great in a habs uni, yes, he would look great in almost any uni in the league. Of course that is why he is nearly untouchable in SJose and we do not have the assets to go after him. If you proposed Souray + Ryder for Marleau, the other GM would laugh in your face and hang up.
I wouldn't mind doing the St. Louis trade. Only thing is i also like the idea of having Abby on the roster for at least half the year so we can see if Huet is the real deal or not.
Ryder expendable? Everyone is expendable, but look our the Habs' needs. 2 years in the league, 55 career goals and grit and determination that never quits? He is a goal scorer, goal scorers get into funks, it happens. Not only that, guys early in their careers are not just players, but capital assets that may pay off for years to come, plus you factor in the perpetual nature of contracts of restricted free agents...it doesn't make sense to unload a Ryder unless you get someone at a similar skill level and age, which is unlikely because we NEED young strong forwards, we don't need to trade them. I understand that people may think he is a floater as he forgets to move his legs sometimes, but c'mon, DO NOT compare him to Jason Allison....they play different positions, Ryder holds the puck way less than Allison, Allison has never skated a full stride in his life (he thinks he's Mario), and Ryder forechecks.
That having been said, Marleau would obviously look good in a Habs uni, but remember he is their captain, a top player, and a C. Plus they just got another winger in Mark Bell, unlikely, but shopping Souray to SJ may not be stupid as they just lost Tim Priessing
Your right Paolo I wasnt saying to get rid of Ryder he just slumps like all other humans LOL..., but I was just saying their style of play is comp to Allison...he is one of our gritiest players and we do need one FAIRLY slow guy with a good shot below the blue...peace G H G
Dude, you are dead on about his skating...and it is frustrating...but he gives it his all...maybe he needs a little conditioning...he is getting older and often times guys mature and realize you gotta devote you ENTIRE LIFE to the team...so maybe he shows up to camp is sick shape.

GO HABS GO!!!
you guys have to remember that ryder played hurt with the neck injury,a lot of players would have been a pussy and went off on the sidelines for half the year!
