After signing Colin White to $3million per season and Mike Rupp to $450,000. According to my math. New Jersey is over $42million. They still have to sign Gomez, Gionta and Martin. I'm smelling an offer sheet coming from some team. How could you not? Offer Gomez $4million and the Devils would have to move real quick to free up some money to sign him, or let him go and enjoy the draft picks. Interesting to see what the Devils do to get these three guys signed, surely, they want to keep all of them.
isnt that simple???? make an offer they have to match gainey.

Well…And-o knows that y’er calculator is work’in just ‘tickety boo’…but y’er reckoning is a ‘titch’ off (at least according to And-o).
Ya see…and someone can/will correct And-o if he is wrong…anyone can ride along way above the salary cap level (since this serves only as a projected expenditure)...however, a salary dump half-way through the year could easily enable Lou to keep his actual spending below the 44 LARGE cap!
…Lou is going to lose a few guys (no doubt about it)…but he is smart enough to drag this hand out long enough until most teams have burned through their own cap space…..then he’ll be able to either land a few prospects or a few draft picks (which beats the heck out of losing guys for nothing).
To the best of my knowledge, the league office will not allow/accept a contract that will put a team over the cap. This is what is meant as a hard cap. I don't know, however, if they can go over when the season hasn't started yet.

tsn.ca reports that the rumors circulating between the habs and Petr Sykora are intensifying, and that he might end up being a hab next season. Sykora is a solid 20 goal, 50 point scorer, and he should come in handy as a replacement of the no-longer Montreal Canadien, Jan Bulis.
Rumors are also starting to come up when the name of Sergei Samsonov is mentioned. He would be a perfect fit as a left-winger on that montreal 2nd line, but it seems as though the Detroit Red Wings are also interested. "
rwp2le tells me that he read (not sure where) that Gainey will be announcing some big news this week. Has anyone else read this or have clue about what's involved?
I've got the inside scoop on thepress conference. Just remember you heard it here first. It will be to announce that things could be worse - we could be San Jose and have signed Patrick Traverse. His other announcement will be that he's run his long distance charges up to $6M trying to sign UFAs and that counts towards the cap.

lol Thanks.... (BTW ~ yer pretty funny Fig's... I liked that one )
sorry and-o but during the off season a team can be 10%above the cap but must be below the cap before the season starts , . that is why last year the devils had to shed frieson for a pick , to get below the cap . lou will have to do some juggling again this year but he will do it by dropping players for picks or to the mnors where they dont count against the cap as long as you signed the contract before your 35 .as far as making and offer for an rfa thats a taboo in the nhl , none have been done since fedorov 10 years ago i believe .
Like MacNeil said you can be 10% over in the offseason. So the off-season cap is 48.4 million, but you must be down to 44 million by the first day of the season. Also at no time during the season can your commitments for future seasons exceed the cap.
with our scouting staff i would not want to give up the draft picks that go with a RFA signing.
In a cap world, those good young cheap players will be handy in the future. Look no further than Eric Staal, and Cam Ward, to see how good young players can bring great returns on your investment. At least until they go for their next contract.
You need to be deep to win in the NEW NHL. So the offer sheet is not the way to do it IMO. That is why we haven't seen one even with the likes of Staal, Spezza, Gomez, and others available to be signed to one.

beaker- when was the last time the habs had an impact draft pick in the ilk of a Staal or SPezza? Komisarek was a first rounder..he will be ok but will not be an impact player like some of those guys. Carey Price? maybe. The jury is still out on him. We have not drafted an impact type player for ages..even when we had teh opportunity to do so we threw it away (see Doug Wickenheiser)

Perezhogin, Kostitsyn, Higgins, at least, are all rated as impact players. Ryder isn't looking too shabby either and neither is the future of Latendresse.

The Houle era and even the Savard era before it was a joke for drafting, but since we brough in Savard/Timmins (too bad one is gone now) we've done very well in the draft. Sure there is no Staal or Spezza superstars but we also haven't drafted that highly either (both 2nd overall picks), there are impact young players on this team.
Honestly the problem is two fold
1) You have to overpay for a guy as an RFA inorder that his team wont match. Killing your capspace.
2) You are giving up future prospects.
Komisarek (still say he will be a top pairing d in 2 years), Higgins (future 40 goal man), Perezhogin, Kostitsyn (will make the team this year), Chipchura (progressing nicely), Price (jury still out, but I think he'll be good),
Tomas Plekanek, Guillaime Latendresse, Emelin (2nd round),
Would you trade 3 from the first group and 1 from the second group to get Staal and have little to no chance of signing more impact guys as he will eat up lots of cap space?? I for one wouldn't. Staal is great, don't get me wrong, but a One line team will not win in the new NHL. I want to see us build a winner in the buffalo mold and you have to do that through the draft.
