As I sit here contemplating my second half-century...............

My wife ghave me a book today on great Stanley Cup dynasties.  Of course there are a couple of chapters on the Habs.  It occurs to me that being born in 1956, I was five before there was a reigning Stanley Cup champion other than the Montreal Canadiens!

Well, Nil, congratulations are certainly in order here! I'm not too far behind myself, come to think of it. I sure hope that elusive 25th cup rolls around before we're too old to really enjoy it...

Thanks for the well wishes, guys.  Glad to be a member of such an elite club!

But I wasn't trying to draw attention to myself, rather to the fact that in my youth the Habs winning the Stanley Cup was a given - and a travesty when it didn't happen.  Now it's a miracle on ice when it does, and we call it a good year when we make the second round of the playoffs!

It's a factor of (1) 30 teams vs. the Original Six - so the odds are one-in-30 rather than 1-in-6 to begin with, and (2) the fact that the Habs no longer have dibs on all Quebec-born players (Toronto had Ontario back then, too) - imagine Lemieux, Brodeur, Bourque, Lecavalier, St. Louis, etc. playing for us..........
