Traded down to take him. He is a two-way, second pairing, right-shooting guy who could have more offense than expected. Definitely a surprise Gainey pick, but he is thought of as a sleeper by scouts.

I don't quite get what you mean by "Traded down to take him" . Doesn't a team normally trade up (i.e. closer to #1) to get a player they want before some other team grabs him?
Anyway, I guess we wanted a defenseman most of all, so I'm glad we didn't pick another goalie this time!
But it seems from what I've read that this guy was not expected to go that high, so I hope Gainey (or Timmins or whoever) knows what he's doing...................

We also traded down to draft Gainey in his year. Pollack knew he wanted Gainey and he also knew Gainey wouldn't go that high same deal with Fischer. Only time will tell. Also his name was sewed on the Habs jersey so its pretty obvious they were looking into him. I would have liked Chris Stewert though.
David Fischer, D, Apple Valley Born: 2/19/88 Ht: 6-3 Wt: 185 Shoots: L From NHL Central Scouting - Strong skater with a wide base, quick first two steps and his pivots and turns are sharp allowing him to gain time and space...has excellent balance, soft hands and a lot of confidence in his skill when rushing the puck...reads and reacts well to the play at hand...blocks shots and plays in all games situations. From ISS: A workhorse who's only going to get better. An offensive d-men who opened many eyes this year thanks to improved defensive play and excellent puck skills. Fischer played in a relatively poor competitive level but his skill level can't go unnoticed. Has a hard, heavy shot from the point that helps make him a tremendous PP triggerman. From TSN: Won Mr. Hockey Award, given to the outstanding senior boys high school hockey player in the state of Minnesota and named St. Paul Pioneer Press boys hockey player of the year...played in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League for St. Paul...battled through a difficult flu, hip pointer and his mothers' battle with breast cancer to captain his high school team to knock off Bloomington Jefferson and heavily favored Academy of Holy Angels in the Section 5AA semifinals in Minnesota High School Tourney...will attend the University of Minnesota.

Why cant Gainey for once..Just ONCE, pick the guy that everyone expects him to pick? I mean it is almost like he invites second guessing. I thought that the idea was (this the justification for taking Price last year) was to take the "best player available irregardless of position". Does not appear that Fischer was the best player available at number 20.

BG must have felt that Fisher was the "best available defenseman", which is what he was after.
However, I agree that picking high schoolers is risky business. Remember Bobby Carpenter? Exactly; most people don't.

I agree with And-O, i was screaming for Sanguenetti at 16, then I crossed my fingers and watched him drop to 20, then I screamed for Sanguenetti again.
Oh well, guess thats why I'm not a GM.
Somebody saw something they really like in this Fischer kid, and given Andre Savard and Trevor Timmins track record so far... Ottawas drafts of the 90s, Higgins, Komisarek, Plekanek, Perezhogin, Kostitsyn, Latendresse etc.. over the Houle years, Matt Higgins, Terry Ryan, Brent Bilodeau, Hollywood Hainsey, Hossa, Chouinard, etc... I think we should trust these guys.
Either that or Bob Gainey is just a Fischer-Price GM (David and Carey).... HAHA I KILL ME.
