Why bother?

That pretty much speaks for itself.....the Habs paid Saku Koivu more money than Rod Brind'Amour gets after leading his team to the Cup!

Say what you will...but the "bashing" is well warranted!

i knew you'd be here and-o and yes koivu is overpaid , we all know it, but you got to believe carolina got a great discount on that signing , how come bob always seems to overpay when he goes shopping . i wonder if he offers more than sticker price when he looks for a new car .

HMMMM. Let's play GM shall we????

What is the average age that an NHL player is actually capable of being an impact player? Even the great ones( Brind'Amour) tend to decline very fast around 37. I don't know to many 39 year old's that I would base my team around. Rod is 36 years old. They gave him about the same $ as Koivu. He is 36! One more good year maybe and he is on his way out...

Koivu on the other hand is 32...still capable of being a key player for another 5-6 years. I think most GM's in this league if given the choice would select Koivu for the cash based primarily on the age difference.

Now, if I wanted to win the cup next year and forget about beyond that...I might pick Rod. But face it, he is OLD by NHL standards...

Is And-O really John Ferguson Jr?

How about bringing in Glen Wesley, and getting Messier to come out of retirement? I guess Belfour is available as well... Heck why not gather up a bunch of 36 year old+...pay them 3.5mil per year for 5 years...and see how we do...John is that you?

Actually I do not think you can put alot of weight on the age difference between Saks and Rod the Bod because Roddy has lost far fewer games due to injury the last few years than Koivu has. Brindamour is in awesome shape and will produce easily for another 5 years. We can debate money til the cows come home. Gainey paid Koivu what he did because he was scared of losing him. The money does not bother me as much as the fact that Koivu demanded a 3 year no trade clause. In comparison, Sakic signed a one year contract because he "wanted to be fair to the team".

Sorry Barry. Age difference means EVERYTHING.

Rod will have one more great season...one more good season...and 3 "leadership" seasons where he is just a third or fourth liner who is a "leader". Yeah he is in good shape but nowadays... so is 99% of the league...

Oh...and Sakic "wanting to be fair"....garbage....he was born in 69'....37 years old!. Won a cup and is settled in Colorado....loaded financially with no real money incentive. He loves it their and has no reason to want to leave. Certainly not to win a cup...he has done that.

Age...even one year in the NHL...makes all the difference. IMO.
