Doesn't surprise me much. This rumor has been floating around for a few months.

Well at least it isn't Tremblay! But what does Muller bring that Gainey, Carbonneau, Jarvis don't? I only mention Gainey because he will still have a lot of input even if he is not behind the bench. I really would have preferred an experienced strategist or at least a coach for the D!

This is great for Montreal.

What does Muller bring that the others don't? Well those who know and have played the game know, that an assistant coach is the middleman between the players and the head coach. Someone the players can talk candidly with, and trust, about good things and bad things. The assistant coach will then address these issues with the player directly or if the player brings up a valid point, he'll go talk to the head coach. The assistant coach is also the guy who stays on the ice late, after practice to work on small details with the young players, injured players or guys who are struggling. He's got a big personality (which Carbo, Jarvis & Mellanson don't, so it's a good mix), is a smart dedicated hockey man (look how he went from a 1st line centre to a 4th line PK winger) and along with keeping things loose,  joking around with the guys, he knows when to crack the whip. He will be a perfect fit with the players and coaching staff. Everybody else who has coached or played with Muller, say the same thing - He's flat out a great guy, on and off the ice.

At least our Muller Jersey is back in the "game wearing" bunch.

Muller has a lot more PP experience and goal scoring touch than anyone else behind the habs bench or in their front office right now.

I think the way Muller played the game is going to help him get more out of some of the guys in the room.  Muller played like Begin, but with talent.

I'm OK with this. Muller is a good pick. The players will feel comfortable with him and will learn alot from him. Muller is a class act!

I will take a "wait and see attitude" on this one. Muller's coaching experience consists of a 8-13-2-1 record at Queen's University. I like this guy..alot..and I like Carbo alot.Certainly we will get mileage out of teh fact that these guys are all great leaders and will inspire our players. But do they know the nuances of the game? I felt that McTavish really showed that he did not in the Finals for Edmonton this year. But I would have really loved to see an experienced coach behind the bench with these guys, rather than this focus on picking guys who were great players for the Habs and hoping for the best. Having said that, I trust in Gainey that he knows a good thing when he sees it and that these guys will learn quickly. Hopefully Carbos stints as an assistant will be enough. Get er done boys.

In Muller's defense about Queen's U.  It is much more of an academic school than an athletic school.  I am not saying he is the next coming, but knowing the character he has, I am happy about Gaineys choice.

Ripple- I think that Muller was brought in to be the "player's coach" more so than for his coaching abilities anyway. This will allow Carbo to be the "bad ass" when he needs to be and Muller can be the good guy...a good fit

True enough, every good team I ever played for had that system.  I guess the guys will need someone to complain to.  Maybe it will work, only time will tell I guess.

Perhaps Jarvis will be like Switzerland.."Neutral Country". As I understand it the roles are as follows:

  1. Carbonneau Head Coach

  2. Jarvis- Power Play, Penalty Kill and Dmen

  3. Muller- Will wear the head set (like Carbo did last year) and communicate with Melanson during the game who is in the press box.

I'm thinking they will make a great coaching tandem but as you said Barry...lots of speculation on the coaching abilities of all 3. Personally I think they will do fine...especially with Gainey watching over their shoulder but one thing I do know for sure is that those 3 names represent 3 of the finest two way forwards to ever play the game and I hope some of that heart and desire trickles down to the players. If it does the team will be fine.....

I agree..certainly all 3 are proven winners as players...but to use an analogy. I am a Sales Manager (my boss says that it means that sometimes I "manage" to sell something). To become a sales manager you need to first be a good salesman for a number of years. But not all good salesmen can become a good sales manager. I have known some really great sales reps who fell flat on their face as managers. Having said that, I say lets give them a chance and hope that the learning curve is short. One thing about these guys..they will command respect because of their playing careers and that will account for alot with the younger players. (Not sure that Kovalev will give a damn lol)

Yeah....Kovalev kind of marches to the beat of his own drummer and that seems to be the case with all of the highly talented Russian players....ie Malakhov, Yashin, Fedorov...etc etc etc. If the staff can motivate Kovalev to play at 100 percent every night that will be a huge improvement to the team right from the drop of the first puck in 06-07.

Good one, Barry!

How about bringing in Benoit Brunet to coach Koivu?  Kjell Dahlin to coach Ribeiro?  Stephane Richer to coach Zednik?  Marc Bureau to coach Sundstrom and Bonk?  Vladimir Malakhov to coach Kovalev?

God, this is fun!
