 Rather than waste money on Downey or Simpson who I admit add toughness. For the same kind of money Gainey could sign the UFA Rico Fata who would bring more to the fourth line in this new styled NHL. We already have Rivet, Souray, Begin and Murray who all can play plus fight so we're tough enough. The new NHL is going towards speed and skill. Not saying Fata is an above average player but would bring more offense at a cheap price than Downey on the fourth line.


 That's what I like about the Sabres. Really good balance. Every line could score. They're not big or loaded with bruisers or big name elite players but can beat you on the score board where it counts. Gainey needs to consider changing his philosophy of managing like it's still pre-CBA.

fata may be a better hockey player but id rather have downey , hes not going to hurt you in the d zone and has been known to drop the mitts when needed , and its still needed occasionally in the new nhl , if downey gets back to where he once was in the fisticuffs dept. he will add much more than fata . they both had 7 point last year by the way and downey was a plus player while fata was a minus .

Downey is also an excellent locker-room guy on a young team and he knows he will be sitting in the press box a lot and yet he still re-signed. Really good 13th forward to have. Gainey has made mistakes, but Downey isn't one of them.

 That must of been before the lockout.


 My point was that we already have guys that can fight and maybe Gainey needs to add more skill. Fata might not be the answer but personally I think he's a much better player than Downey.


 If Begin is going to be on our fourth line again, why not add a decent skater and player that can give that line more of a scoring demension.
