There is perhaps no one who wants to see Gainey leap into the free agent pool and land us our long awaited top centreman more than And-o, but maybe we should all consider the math first!
Just for example, have a brief look at both Jason Arnott and Marc Savard – both are free agents July 1st!
On one hand, Arnott made $2.926 million in Dallas. He is smack-dab in the midst of his prime and will, undoubtedly, be looking to shore-up his ‘nest-egg’! It is therefore reasonable to assume that Jason Arnott will be looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of $3.75 – $4.5 million per.
On the other hand, Marc Savard is coming off a career year with the Thrashers. He is just entering his prime age in terms of production (almost 30 goals and almost 100 points last year) and he made $2.28 million last season. This guy must be figuring on a MAJOR raise in pay!!! In fact, this guy might not settle for a dime less than $4.5 million dollars per (ascending year-by-year as well).
Now And-o asks…is there a better solution to more wisely manage cap room?
With $4.5 million per season, the Habs could quite likely secure the services of a guy like Alyn McCauley (who made $1.1 million last year) to be the 2nd line centre (even if they doubled his salary to $2.2 million). That would leave another $2.3 million to either kick-in for a d-man like Salei ($1.8 million last year) or Kuba ($1.7 million last year). Another option for the remaining $2.5 million would be to split it amongst two so-called ‘depth’ defensemen (maybe guys like Pothier and Eaton).
At any rate, And-o is not certain that there is one unrestricted free agent centreman presently available that would be worth chucking a boatload of $$$ at right now, especially considering the quality second tier type guys now available!
If Savard moves to another team for alot more money than he got in his last contract - that team would have to have two pretty good wingers for Savard to work with if the new team expects close to the same numbers that Savard got with Atlanta afterall Savard's wingers with the Thrashers were Hossa & Kovalchuk ..........
And-o, you make a very good point, but isnt montreal already filled with tier 2 guys and that is why we are looking for #1's? Saku is a MUCH better #2 center than your Alyn... Montreal has lots to offer and we SHOULD be able to get something pretty good back. Lets not sign more Czerkoski's and berizens and lindens, and sundstroms and bonks and .....you get my drift?

You almost read my mind. If McCauley is to be our number 2, who will be our #1? We haven't had a legitimate first line center in years, maybe since Muller or Turgeon. We need one now to compete. A team of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th liners isn't going very far in the playoffs.
No farther than the semi's apparently. Kovalev was a great addition and hes doing what hes paid to do, and pretty well on an offensively challenged team ( he lead the team in points this year didnt he?? ) If you get more guys on the team who can score, everyones #'s will go up. Kovalev helps, but he wont bring us the cup by himself, and im afraid until we get him more help, we wont be going anywhere. To ask Kovalev and Saku to BE the team EVERY night is too much. Good teams have 4-5 guys who can control a game. We have 2 in Kovalev and Huet... Koivu cant have his way with everyone...

It's way past due time to get us a top notch player. Personally I like Savard. The guy would rack up points with Kovy. I consider him a top notch player that will consistently improve his over all game. Arnott has had an inconsistent career. I remember watching him with the Oilers and you didn't know what you were getting. One game he looked like Mario Lemieux and the other, like a feeble Ribs. He could end up being another frustrating player to watch like Kovy. Alot of talent but may not always feel like using it. Bring on Savard...at least you know what your getting. A player that is faster and stronger on his skates than Ribs but can pass and see the ice just as well. Also a better goal scorer.
