Streit Signs for 2 years

For all of you Mark Streit lovers out there (and I know there are tons), Reports in the La Journal de Montreal say that Mark Streit has signed a new 2 year contract with Montreal.

At 600,000 per year this is about the right salary for a 7th dman.

My hypothetical question for the day is this...would Streit even be a 7th dman on any other team in the NHL? In other words, is this an indication of our sorry lack of depth at that position both in Montreal and Hamilton?

I think the right word would be "shocked". Why is he even spending time with the Streit issue? Doesn't Gainey have other priorities? Do I have to list the UFA on this team that should have most of the attention right now? Don't you try to sign your core players before you even think of signing a 7th or even 8th D-man?

Streit should be a little bit better this year as he will have more experience on the smaller ice and with the North American game.

Yeah i think he would be a 7th dman for a lot of teams.  Rory Fitzpatrick is the 7th dman for the Sabres and he is no better than Streit IMO.  Neither is Oleg Tverdovsky (getting a lot more coin).

As far as guys in Hamilton, yeah some might be better than Streit, but id rather have streit sitting in the Montreal Pressbox than a rookie dman up there.  If a rookie dman makes the habs it has to be in the top 6.

My sincere hope is that he was signed so that he can be traded. The Habs D needs help and despite the fact that his play improved a bit after the Olympics, Mark Streit isn't it. Hopefully Gainey has his eye on getting a good blueliner in exchange for Streit and another player, a minor leaguer, or a draft pick.

OOO Mine, I despise him...... As for Streit, good signing for a small contract. He has loads of potential but he will be on the bus again with the callups.

Streit made 550 last year so maybe the minimum he could get as a restricted is 600.

Wow, great job guys. You again blame a guy who did not even play in the playoffs (what was it, 1.35mins ....). Why at the World Championship in Latvia he was again chosen as the best Swiss player? Gainey gives him trust, and he will pay back, you gonna see ...
