Thats the article. I think its good news, we all love Begin and Downey is a solid fill in fighter, plus he said he's going to build back up his reputation for fighting.

Great news about Begin, excellent player, any team would take him no doubt. But I could care LESS about Downey, he's a career AHL player to me. I like Murray a lot more. Instead of getting Downey why didn't we get someone like May, a much better player who brings Downey's game and a lot more, a little scoring punch, more heart, penalty killing, more experience, leadership...... I swear if we keep say Sundstrom, another bum, I am going to be so pissed.

I too think its time to part with Sunny, the guy hasnt done much the past while....and doesnt have a spot on the PK line or checking line with guys like Plek, Bonk, Begin, Murray etc... Time for someone new...

Are you sure its Downey and not Murray and begin getting new deals. I find it kinda odd they would say Begin and Downey get new deals and not list Murray...but murrays is the first to come out...

OK, after seeing teams like Oilers, Sabres and Canes with speed and skill, do we want to waste a position on a guy like Downey who can only skate forward and lost his reputation as a fighter with two losses and one shadow boxing display? Where is Gainey going with this if we lose a player like Bulis but keep Downey? Will we ever be a skilled team or is he still managing in the past life? This team needs skill so I agree to keep guys like Murray and Begin because they can play the game and fight also but filling a roster with too many of these players will hurt us. We need goal scoring also, not saying Bulis is a sniper but he can score the odd goal. Gainey had his feud with Bulis earlier to justify not re-signing him...fine! but he better make up for the Downey signing by signing a free agent or two that can play and score goals.

Gainey, where are you going with this one? Time will tell!

Gainey continues to overpay in my opinion. Begin got 1.2 million and scored 11 goals last season. Now before you all jump all over me and say "oh but Stevey brings so much more to the team than goals (a la Saku Koivu)", think of this. He is a 4th liner. Let scompare him to another 4th liner..let us say, Travis Green in Boston. Green makes 700,00. Plays more minutes and wins more draws. Better yet, where does this set the bar for Michale Ryder?
