I thought the NHL lockout was supposed to stop this insanity. The Leafs resign McCabe to a 5 year deal worth between 5.5 to 6 million a year. McCabe is a great power play specialist, with a great shoot, but in what was a so called breakout year he was a minus one in 5 on 5 situations. He was a defensive liability in the Olympics, and yet his signing has just moved the bar higher on future ufa signings.
If Bob Gainey is smart he will start locking up the likes of Higgins, Ryder, Plekanec and others to long term deals while they have limited bargaining power, because salaries are going to continue to escalate. Koviu and Kovalev salaries are begining to look like a bargain.
I thought under the radar players like Mitchell, Kubina and Spacek would be bargains, but whne Nashville resigns Zidlicky to 13.4 million over 4 years, and now the Leafs give the deal they did for McCabe I have to wonder about the whole new salary cap era. Markov is a ufa next season along with Rivet, and Souray, what will they compand in salaries next season?
Its like Dags said during the lockout that he was just a noodle in a bowl of soup. The salery's haven't went down for the star player only for the role players. A cap solves nothing unless the max salary is down to like 5-4 mill which would allow more players to make more money
This is kind of off base but it makes me wonder what kind of salaries would guys like The Rocket, Beliveau, LaFleur, Robinson, etc...etc...etc demand nowadays? McCabe is a good player but he certainly isn't a superstar...at least in my estimation. Oh well...opinions are like arseholes....evryone has one......
As much as these salaries are ridiculous, the fact remains that there is still a cap and at some point, players will have to lower their demands a bit to fit into a team's budget. The other bonus is that it isn't always the big market teams that are making these signings anymore. That said, the max player compensation percentage should be lower than what it is now... fat chance of that happening though.
And-o is speechless! ...if McCabe is worth $5.5'ish million USD, how much are guys like Redden, Jovo & Chara worth? (The players won't ever give another inch to the owners...why should they?)
Let me tell you how much...the FRangers are reportedly prepared to offer Chara close to 8 million per year. How is THAT for perspective? (By the way, IMHO, Chara is HIGHLY overated..but not as overated as mCCabe).

If the Leafs want to blow there money on plugs let them,it's not going to change what the other gm's are going to do. All that has done is assured that Toronto wont be able to go after the higher priced UFA's that are worth the money. And I'm hopeing the other players are not that dumb to think this is going to be the norm. for contracts and realize that Toronto just made a stupid mistake.
I really hope John Ferguson Jr. is in Toronto for a long time and keeps running that team into the ground
As a said when the lockout was resolved you are gonna see two types of players in the NHL. Superstars making 5million or more per season and Role players at under 2million per year. The inbetween guys will slowly filter out.
Guys like Richards and Lidstrom, Jagr, Thornton will still get big bucks. Guys like Martin Lapointe will no longer be offered big deals.
The GMs who learn this the fastest will survive, those who don't will be fired for having crappy teams.
IMO this is way, way too much for Brian McCabe. 3.5-4 max would have been my offer. Sure he can shoot, but the rest of his game sucks. A guy with 70pts for a defenceman should not finish the season -1.
Hmmm McCabe is good but he does not deserve that fat pay check..... But another team would have paid him as much so ..... I don't know I never really liked McCabe, I don't find him to be the best offensive-defensive defenseman, I don't like him defensively.
