Trades that didn't happen

Listening to Team990, they repoorted that in today's Journal the Montreal, there's an article in which it states that the Canadiens offered Jose Theodore at the trade deadline to Tampa Bay  in exchange for Brad Richards.   Tampa declined but offered Martin St. Louis instead.  In which, Gainey declined.

If this is true then Bob obviously thinks St. Louis is overpaid and will not be going after him this off-season.  He obviously has a plan for how he wants to spend the increased cap room and with the original attempt to get Richards it looks like a Number 1 Centreman is part of that plan.

Again though its hard to confirm if this rumor is true though.

Would you have declined that trade?  Tough call.  But it does give a glimpse into the plan for a #1 Centre...

I would have taken that one in a heartbeat.  A surplus (high-maintenance) goalie for a forward - yes, small - with high offense potential (And a Quebecois to boot).  A no-brainer, and certainly better than the real trade that happened.

Personally, I don't believe the rumour at all.

I am with Nilsey on this one..if Gainey did not take St Louis for Theo then I am seriously concerened about his mental well being. Then again had Jay feaster, the Tampa GM made that trade, I would have said the same about him.

In a way, its believable....do we REALLY need another SMALL player on an already small team. Getting St Louis (especially for his price ) would not help us any. Then again....Aebischer isnt the most attractive player either...but it is SOMETHING and it is better than having 5.5 on the bench. Abby i have on the fence right now...i've seen 2 goalies out of him...and personally i dont like it. Im hoping if he stays...we get the abby who beat ottawa. If he goes i hope we get something that HELPS our team.

Wow I would have taken that deal because Huet was our number 1 goalie. So why get another number 1 goalie ??? We lacked offense, what St-Louis brings to a team, a Art-Ross Trophy winner.

All this talk about the Habs looking away from highly talented players becasue their small is just ridiculous. Look at the Sabres...huge-sized players right? That's just one example...

So we turned a trade to send a burnt out/injured/over paid goaltender for the current Hart Trophy winner and a player who can score 30 goals while having a mediocre season. Does he play like he's small? The Habs have too many goal scorers already...

Gainey was going to unload Theo anyway. Who cares if they are making more or less the same salary, you are getting quality in return. So let's put it into perspective...which trade would you take Theo for Abby or St. Louis?

I'll even stick my neck out and say if we had St. Louis, the Habs would of had a much better chance of beating the Canes. A player like him would of made the difference...just imagine the powerplay, hello? It's not like special teams has an impact on the game...

Honestly guys, this has to be a false rumour.

Gainey was looking to dump Theo's salary. There is NO WAY Tampa Bay offered St. Louis for Theo when all they had to do was offer...I don't know...Grahame?

Barry and Nil are dead on.

Totally right I don't think Tampa Bay who had a hard time just barely making the playoffs in the last spot, I don't think that they would trade off their top 3rd or 4th forward, even though they would be getting insurance in goal. Wow come to think of it Theo would have helped them, Burke and Grahame are push overs. And I agree with Key Lime, St-Louis FOR SURE would have scored against Carolina 1-3 goals, which would have made the difference in those 1 goal games.....He is a gamebreaker, explosive player, he would have helped our dreadful pp as well.
