MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Monday that team captain Saku Koivu successfully underwent surgery to his left eye Saturday evening at Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal.
The surgery, performed by the Canadiens’ team ophthalmologist Dr. John Little and retina specialist Dr. Mila Oh, became necessary to repair a tear in the retina of Saku Koivu’s left eye, discovered during an examination performed by Dr. Little on Saturday afternoon.
Koivu is presently resting and his recovery will last several weeks.
Wait a second...this can't be good news. A buddy of mine had a tear in the retina after getting hit playing rugby. Perfect eyesite...but had to stop playing rugby...too risky.
Or was it a detached retina on my buddy...I can't recall???
I'm more a musculoskeltal guy so I don't know much about the eye...any medical people out there who know?
Retinal detachement happens when the retina is pulled away from its normal position. The retina sends visual images to the brain through whats called "optic nerve" and when a detachment occurs, vision is blurred. A detached retina is a very serious problem that almost always causes blindness unless it is treated. The retina lies on the back of the eyball, smoothly leaning against it. It works kinda like a film in a camera.
Koivu only had a partial tear as i read. That is still dangerous but higher % of complete recuperaton. Your buddy probably had a detached retina and was afraid of losing his sight for good. A good decision in my book.
Koivu should have a full recovery.
There are a few types of detachment of the Retina, but we wont get into any of that today.
If any other medical Questions or concerns, i ll help any and all!

Thanks for that medical expertise, Saku. I read "tear in the retina" - I assumed it was 'tear' as in "rhymes with bear", as opposed to tear as in crying - and figured it was serious. I remember when Sugar Ray Leonard had a detached retina, had it fixed, then fought again, and the whole world thought he was nuts to do so.
So I'm relieved that a tear is not as bad as a detached retina, and the chances for recovery are good.
Tell me this: it seems that the operation was decided on very quickly (first we heard about it, it was already done), only a matter of a few days after Saku was out & about at the Bell Centre. Is this something that has to be fixed immediately or it doesn't get properly fixed at all?

Correct Nil , if you dont take care of it with a certain amount of "hurry" it can be permanent damage. In saku's case it was done in timely fashion. He should have no problems

Very comforting to hear. Thanks, Saku (both of you!)

Saks admitted that his experience with cancer really has helped him deal with this serious problem. He's a soldier...the confidence and his fearless nature is a given but I hope that the eye will heal itself quickly...
