Press conference

Around 10:00 RDS showed a press conference with Bob Gainey and Guy Charbonneau which was followed by a press conference with Saku Koivu.

Bob Gainey/Guy Charbonneau press conference:

Basically, Bob said that we reached our team's potential this season however we did not surpass it.  Also, he said that he really wants to do everything possible to keep Huet with the Montreal Canadiens.  He said they were very fortunate to bump into him.  Also, he talked about Markov and how he played during the playoff.  He said that he could play better.  Also, he said that Markov is a very complexe person and it will be up too Cardo and his assistants to reach into his untaped talent and to motivate him.  Also, Carbo said that he doesn't know exactly who is the assistant coach but he does have alot of choices to make his decision from.  Also, when asked if Bob was going to try to acquire some powerful forwards, he answered that he needs to look at the present team and try to fit in what he needs ... he said that could mean a forward but it could also mean a defensemen.  However, Carbo did state that he would like to have a more offensive team.  Also, he wants to instill teamwork and family into his hockey team.  He really wants that to be what the Montreal Canadiens are all about.  They also mentionned that he was very impressed by Higgins, Plekanec, Pezerghozin, Komisarek, Kovalev and I think he said Ryder.  Also, he said that Ribeiro could be a good NHL player but he still has some growing up to do.  He also said that we would be seeing more of players like Chipcura, Latendresse, Coté, etc.  One reporter asked him if he thought wether it was important for Koivu to know the french language, to better connect with the francophone habs fans ... he simply replied that Koivu's wife knew how to speak french very well and if Koivu would spend more time with her maybe he would pick it up to.  An anglophone reporter quickly stated that what is important is that the captain is a good leader that could lead us to a Stanley Cup and not wether or not he knows how to speak french.  As long as he does his job it is not important what language he speaks.  Finally, Gainey said that we have the revenues to compete with every other team in the league to attract the top free agents in the league ... he then said that we have an upper hand though because he is planning to push the fact that Montreal is such a great place to play hockey in.  He then went on too say thank you to fans and that Montreal is the best place for hockey because we are so passionnate about hockey here.  He also said that if the players cannot take the heat of the media then they shouldn't being playing with Montreal Canadiens.  And finally he said that Montreal is a city that cares about hockey and it s hockey team and now what he has to try to do is find some players who care enough to play for the HABS.

Saku Koivu's press conference:

He said that is vision is getting better.  There is no harm done to the front of his eye, however, they cannot say the same to the back of his eye because there is still to much blood to see anything.  Also, he said that one of his eye bone's are broken, however, it is not serious and will heal by itself.  He then went on to say that he has no hard feelings towards Justin Williams and that it was really classy the way he called Koivu to see if he was alright.  He then commented on the fact that a 4 minute penalty should have been called on the play.  He also adressed the whole Journal the Montreal incident.  He said that it was very unfortunate because that one persone will give the whole media a bad name.  He then went on to say that overall the media respected his wishes to have some privacy and to be left alone. Also, it was really tough to see his team lose 4 games in a row because all he could do was watch.  He also stated that he was very grateful to the fans for supporting him and he went on to say that Montreal is the best place to play hockey in.  He loves it here and this is where his home is.  He then adressed the fact that he hadn't learned french yet.  He just said that it is a combination of lazyiness and other factors.  However, he then went on to say that it did not seem to him that the francophone fans were upset with the fact that he did not know how to speak french.  He also stated that he was impressed with the young players and the team's progress.  He said the team has improved alot over the years and that it will take some more time before we can have a team that is a Stanley cup contender.  However, we are on the right road.  Finally , he was asked if he wanted Huet to stay and his answer was 100% yes.  And when asked who he would like to see come here, I think he said that he wants players to come here that can handle the pressure of the media and the fans.  If they can't then they should not be a Montreal Canadien.

I second that. It is difficult to learn a second language late in life. I attempted to learn french and just did not have the time to get it( my teacher told me that I would need to spend at least 1-2 hours/day to learn). Some people are natural at picking up a second language...others with equal intelligence...do not have a natural ability to pick up any second language. My skills are geared towards math...not language.

Anyway..who gives a rats A$#??? It's hockey...with Russian/Finnish/Swedish etc.

French media...What would you rather have...Koivu focused on the habs...or spending 3-4 hours a day learning the language? Just stupid, stupid,stupid...and arrogant.

That's about all I remember. Thank you Kellogg's for burning that French into my head. (Just kiddin'.... my French is just really basic)

What a nice way for those guys to end the season. Can't wait till the Fall.

I know whatcha mean. Not sure what to do with my nights when the season comes to a close.

It's one thing to find stuff to do on the nights with no games during the season, but the summertime.... I'm tapping my inner-elbow waiting for my hockey fix.

Language is best learnt up until age 14, then it gets much harder. Saku's a little past that...
