MONTREAL (CP) - Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu still doesn't know the full extent of an eye injury he suffered during the first round of the NHL playoffs but he says all signs point to him making a full recovery.
''It looks like the vision will be back 100 per cent,'' Koivu said Friday. ''But we have to wait until all the blood is gone before we know for sure.''
Koivu was speaking to reporters for the first time since he was struck in the left eye by an errant high stick from Justin Williams in Game 3 of the Canadiens' first-round NHL playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Koivu said Williams' stick grazed his eye and broke a bone just to the left of the eye.
He said is appears the front part of his eye was spared from any major damage but that there may be a problem behind the retina that could require surgery.
It's strange but in his press conference yesterday he said he is still not sure that there is no damage to his retna...What worries me is he says that his vision goes and comes back in intervals. He says for about 4 hours, he sees fine and then, out of the blue, his vision in the left eye is impaired for a few more hours...
