Ryder shoots he......
Permalink Closed

If Ryder put as many pucks in the net as he does in the netting above the glass this series would be over. It just seems that he tries to do it himself and shoots any chance he gets, obviously it works sometimes but most times he needs to take a second to look around and make a pass to set up a better play. Different story if he had the speed to beat the defence but he doesn't and 9 out of 10 shots the player gets his stick in front of the shot and it goes skyward.

Good observation.  I think it was part of the game plan to shoot as often as possible to get the goalie off his game.

Sorry Keith, gonna have to disagree with you. Ryder is a GOAL SCORER. Not a play maker. He is paid to put the puck in the net. Saku is on that line to make those pretty passes, and even he was being critisized fro not shooting enough. Personally, i think Ryder is playing fine, he is leading the team in goals, so give him some slack. Also, A shot on net is much more dangerous than an extra pass. At least the shot has a chance of going in, a pass can turn into many other things. Bad give away...no shot....no goal...at least not for our team...

My only concern with Ryder is next year it will be his third year in the league. He scored 25 last year and 30 this year...an improvement but he seems to be picking up bad habits like he's trying to be a playmaker (broken record). Actually with Koivu out, it was even more obvious last game.

I hope that he works on that in the off season. He is a future 40 goal scorer but firsthe has to accept reality.

I agree that more shots to the net is better but it's the wrong net that he's hitting, I'm just saying it's his timing and where he's shooting from is the problem. There's been a few instaces where he's come across the blue line 3 on 2 and he shoots after drawing the d-man over to him and leaving someone open with a passing lane. It just seems to be the only game he's got and he has to think more about what's going on out there.

Once he learns to look for open ice from the blueline in, Ryder will be a 40 goal scorer.  He has to get himself in a shooting position and create some space for himself(anybody remember Tim Kerr.  Not the best skater or passer but he could find that gap).....  Ryder should limit his puck handling between the bluelines.  This is not his forte, and this is where he misses Saku.

You nailed it, hockeyman. Ryder is not a player with vision, but he knows where the net is. Once he begins to develop more patience with the puck and a better understanding of his game and what to avoid trying, he will become a consistent 35-40 goal-scorer. The one thing I would like to see him do is develop his game without the puck a little more, but that won't be too hard with the coaches we have.
