First of all, I commend Muller and John M for not giving in to the urge to say "I told ya that they could not win without Saks". Obviously you guys know your hockey and know that was not the problem last night, although certainly a factor.
Let me keep this short and sweet. The problem that has hounded this team all year came back to bite them last night. They did NOT comptete! Gainey said himself after the game that his forwards did not work hard enough and yes, the shots on goal in this case are a definate true indicator of the game. Gainey failed to address the problem at center ice at the trade deadline. Aside form a terribly slow Todd Simpson, Gainey failed to address the slow defence problems. Ladies and gentlemen, we are now paying the price for that. Even with Koivu in the lineup we are terribly weak at the center ice position. Factor in Begin out and we are horrid. PERIOD.
Even Saks was unable to generate any shots on net to speak of in this series. We are being manhandled down the middle. PLAIN and SIMPLE. Ribs has elevated his game to an extent but is not a 2nd line center and Bonk is not a first line center. To give Bonk credit, I thought he played well and competed last night. Let me make a prediction. This series is OVER. Done. TOAST. Call me negative and poop all over me. I can take it. But I call it like I see it. Gainey felt at the deadline that there was nothing worth going after to fill the holes in the team. He has decided to allow the kids to develop and to wait for the free agent bonanza to sign players. He knows alot more than me and I respect his approach and plan.
But, in reality, we were gifted 2 games in Carolina due to horrible goaltending. Cam Ward goes in and we almost lose game 2. We have been dominated down the middle and our dmen have looked like pylons dressed in Santa suits (see Souray and Bouillon last night). I hope I am wrong. But when you do not show up to play a pivotal game like last night, it does not lend one much hope for optomism.

I'm as confused as a starving baby in a topless bar!
You can call me delusional but I'll be manning the phones today looking for that Leaf fan who'll put $150 up against my $100 that Habs win this thing. I'll start with the friend who gave me 12 to 1 at the start of the 86 play-offs (I let him buy out for $500 before the final game - I'm too soft!)
The Canes are sitting fat and sassy - the cats who have eaten the canary. Brindamour has the frickin' nerve to be on national television expressing disbelief on the called back goal - and how this mistake could have cost them a series. THIS MISTAKE? COST A SERIES?
I believe the Habs will tighten the circle while back on the road and Begin will be back in. Two things Begin will bring that others will follow - hitting the Dmen and crowding the goalie (of course 5 will get you 10 that when the Habs crowd the goalie they'll get a penalty). Nonetheless I suspect Cam will be seeing the ass of Begin's hockey pants in his sleep.
I'm afraid you might be right... there seems to be a feeling of resignation creeping into Habland at the moment. Everybody's putting on a brave face but there is a sense of impending doom at the moment. If it's true that Begin will be back tomorrow I feel a little better. If we are going to go out I would like to see, to qoute davidb, a little retribution. It's one thing to be beaten fair and square it's another thing altogether to be pushed around, intimidated. I might be that todays defeat atChelsea has got me a little down, both my teams don't usually lose in the course of less than 24 hours. I hope I'm wrong and the guys are fired up tomorrow...Come 'on BG light their fire!
PS, what in the name of /(&%#¤& is a 'Canes fan doing at our site?

Man U didn't lose, they were destroyed. Sort of looked like Sunderland out there... now Joe Cole, there's a real footballer
Weaknesses last night, Bonk, Ryder, Ribs, Kovy, Bulis, Souray and Rivet. These guys should have been the furthest thing from the weakness last night. These are the guys that should have been able to pick up the slack and elevate their game. They didn't and that's the difference last night.
These guys need to realize it's do or die the next game. Don't bother losing the next one and think you will come back after that. Let's go boys, let's see the supposed 'A's lead this team, that's Souray, Rivet and Kovy. Ribs and Bulis will be gone in the offseason unless they are willing to prove that they deserve to stay, so far, goodbye!

He'll be in a comfy position to watch Arsenal win the Champions then!
Almost forgot, Barry, if you talk to CJ before team Canada leaves for Europe, ask him nicely to go easy on us. Otherwise I'm afraid we're in for a real ass-kicking!
Barry maybe I am an optimist...but here's what I think...
1) If you think the Habs defense is slow I am utterly confused...not physical enough maybe, prone to mistakes maybe but any D with Markov, Bouillon, and Dandeneault cannot be characterized as slow, especially when you consider Rivet and Komisarek while not fleet of foot aren't exactly Derian Hatcher. Souray is probably the slowest one...and didnt he catch someone from behind on a breakaway this series...Speed is not the Ds problem.
2) I agree our weakness lies in our centers..particulary ribs...but i think more importantly Montreal lacks a true sniper...Higgs and Ryder have had good seasons and Zed Bulis and Kovy can pot the puck but our Habs lack a true sniper! Mebbe Kostitsyn will develop into that I don't know...but we need goal scoring to shake Ward's confidence. I really wish that this summer we can find a way to steal Havlat, Richards, or Gaborik away from their teams.
3) Finally I think we need someone to lay the body on the forecheck with begin back on sunday hopefully he'll be able to play his robust style and run all over the ice and hit people. Carolina's D aren't great we need to make them rush, cough up the puck, and fear the hurt.
