Personally its funny for me, cause when we lose we always have to blame the captain for not stepping up. However when we win we never give the captain credit and we still crticise him. What does he gotta do?
I think all the "Koivu" talk stems from the fact that there is a divide over what people think his intended role is... Those that figure he should be getting 80-90 points/30-35 goals. And those that see him as one of the better all around players in the game( defense/offense/leadership)....good for 55-65 points and 20-25 goals.
Trust me Gainey is no idiot. He did not sign Koivu to be a big time point producer. He signed him to play games like he did last night. The 7.5 million dollar guy is the "elite" in this game( Thornton, Jagr...eventually Ovechkin and Crosby). Gainey locked up a great two-way centerman and I imagine will locate a 6-7 million dollar centerman in the offseason.
But guys...Koivu is really really good. I am not saying that to be insightful. Just understand the important role he plays and be happy that the habs have a fair amount of cap room to find that big "stud" center Koivu needs to be even more effective.
Not that AB or an-d'oh want defending, but they didn't start with bashing. It was purely reltaliation. They did accidently forgot to mention anything about him in their posts and only got out the broken record once Muller posted his thoughts on the game.
A captain doesn't have to show up on the scoresheet for him to have played a good game - ie Carbo, Gainey...sure, Koivu is a points player, and they will come. 1.00PPG isn't a bad start. Had we won 2-1, he'd be king. But since it was only an assist on the 4th goal that put the heavy favoured team out of the game for good, it was meaningless . Seriously, a bad player would have quit and settle for 3-1.

Figaro, Saks and Ribs played evenly well. You have to admit that BRILLIANT is a huge stretch for Saks. The whole team played well and Huet was the closest thing to brilliant.

You state my point exactly Figaro. It is like John and Muller miss it when And- O and Ab say nothing against Koivu. So they start a post that they know will start an anti-Koivu rant. In my opinion, one side is as guilty as the other and it is not worth wading into. I will say this. It is just as absurd to hear someone state that "Koivu played a brilliant game Saturday" as it is ridiculous to state that he was non-existent and only recorded one assist. Both sides are obviously affected by personal bias.
As far as whether Koivu is worth the money he gets that can be debated forever. Whether it is fair or not, in the "New NHL" players will be more and more judged on "STATS" and not "Intangibles". With precious salary cap being eaten up by big contracts. fans will expect much more from players. Kovalev will be expected to score more, Koivu will be expected to score more, Luongo will be expected to stop more etc etc. The day is gone where you can sign a player for huge dollars and shrug it off if he does not produce.
Koivu is a great player who brings alot to the table. Is he worth tying up 1/8th of your cap space for? That can be debated forever. But look for fans and management's expectations to be elevated in the new NHL. It is economic reality.
