One of the major key's to the Hurricanes success this season is due to their coach Peter Laviolette. He took over in December 2003 and spent the rest of the season changing the team's long standing trap first mentality to a more aggressive puck pursuit approach. He did not get great results at first, but he stayed with it. The results this season are very evident. The Hurricanes are quick, and their style perfectly suits the new NHL. Like the way their defencemen jump into the rush and aggressive 2 man forecheck. Matt Cullen never know as a goal scorer had 24 this year. Laviolette has been able to get production from players not previously know for it.
The Canadiens have a lot of team speed themselves, only wish they would emulate the Hurricanes style, if they did perhaps it would increase the Habs goal scoring capabilities. Of course the Canadiens defence is not as mobile as the Canes, but the forwards speed would be better utlized than the 1-4 trap.
I think we will see a more aggressive team next year. I think Gainey went with the trap to get us into the play-offs and next year we will play a little more up-tempo when he have more time to implement a system. At least I hope so!

I think it would be very fair to expect a different system from the team next year because we'll have a new head coach. Although they are similar, they are not the same person, and do not agree on everything, so I think it will be very interesting to see what Carbonneau has in store for us.
I seriously hope we ditch the trap next season. We have the team speed and a lot of guys who have skills on the forecheck. I hope we keep Zednik and/or Bulis, because I think both will be better with a 2-man forecheck.
Agreed. Markov's breakout passes must be crisp and accurate. The other guys have to go with the short forward passes and keep it simple. Circling back behind the net too often will just get them in trouble.
Good to hear from you , hockeyman. How are things in northern Ontario? Have any iea what ever happened to NOHF?
