There is a lot of intrigue involving the Montreal Canadiens going into the Stanley Cup playoffs, namely who will get the start in net.

Needless to say, there's a lot of talk in Montreal about it.

Will it be Cristobal Huet - who started the team's season finale against the New Jersey Devils - or will it be David Aebischer?

Going into the season finale, Huet had a league-best .930 save percentage with a 2.14 goals-against average and seven shutouts, while Aebischer had an .899 save percentage, 3.09 GAA and three shutouts.

But in his seven starts since joining the Canadiens in a March 8 trade with Colorado for Jose Theodore, Aebischer has an .891 save percentage, 3.72 GAA and no shutouts.



There are those who feel that if the Canadiens face the Ottawa Senators, Aebischer should get the nod in goal. After all, Aebischer defeated the Senators twice in the second-last week of the season.

I suspect that when all is said and done, Aebischer will be the starting goalie for the postseason. He has a little more experience, and a good as Huet has been, there seems to be a sense that the Canadiens will go with that experience.

This will make for a huge controversy in Montreal, because Huet is the guy who put the Habs on his back and carried them into the playoffs.



I don't know if McKenzie is crazy or not, but I sure hope Gainey isn't thinking the same way, because we might be in trouble if he is.

BG would have to be on drugs to make such a call -- but maybe he is. Did you see him in the interview before the Bufflao game on Saturday -- that business about choosing the starting goalie by shifting marbles around in his pocket? What kind of manure is that? The only possible reason I can fathom for doing that would be to put Huet on notice that the off-season contract negotiations are going to be difficult ones, that BG is ready, willing and able to go with Abby next year if Huet won't kowtow to him. Well, BG, if that's your strategy, you need to fire yourself and find someone with an ounce of sense to take over.

As it turns out, The Habs didn't need the win in Buffalo to make the playoffs. But nobody knew that then. By all measures, Abby is the inferior goaltender. Going with him in such an important game -- at the expense of the guy who got you to the playoffs -- is insanity. Naturally Huet didn't look 100% sharp tonight against NJ after his extended layoff, but he still looked a lot better than Abby has in any game he's played for us.

Maybe Mackenzie and BG know something I don't. But from my standpoint, Abby should ride the bench from now until golf season.

Right now thats the least of our concerns. It doesn't matter if Patrick Roy himself was in the net we still have problems on offense and defense.

Sure we have problems. So why add to them? And honestly, until the 3rd period collapse, the guys played a great game, I thought.

I feel the same way Jeddah, what I saw of the first 50 minutes or so, Habs were dominating. Jersey was just WAY too hungry once they got that Gionta goal that should have been called back...and they had a lot to be hungry for with the division title in sight.

Recently its been all third period collapses. against Buffalo. Against Boston where they almost blew it. And again against New Jersey.

24: Gionta clearly caught the puck, closed his hand on it, skated across the crease, dropped the puck on his stick, and put it into the empty net.

I disagree.  I didn't see him close his hand on it.  He just pawed it down and managed to get it on his stick.  Either way, they played like crap in the 3rd and didn't deserve it.  Win or lose it made no difference in the standings, it only hurt their very fragile confidence.

24: I agree that the loss meant more emotionally than anything else. Tough come-down from such a big high after the first 38 minutes.
