Gainey - Genius or Madman??
Permalink Closed

One thing for certain - he's one or the other.

The easiest ride he could have taken was to ride the hot goaltender until he falters - no blame to Bob, blame falls on Huet.

He chose not to - the result - two goalies playing well. But is the goaltending roulette messing up the rest of the team? That is the question.

Hate him or love him - clearly he's a man with a plan!

I'd like to state my opinion now - before the Habs win the Cup or before they miss the play-offs. In the first scenario BGs our god, in the 2nd he IS what's ailing the Habs.

So here's my opinion - now - before the results are in.

He's got my support - I like him - I'll take a coach who fails with a plan, a high risk plan over a fence sitter, easy road artist any day.

BG has chosen a path that will hang failure around his neck and no one elses - of course should he succeed he will quietly step back and allow success to shine on his club.

A real leader is so rare these days in any arena of life  - politics, art, sport - its become foreign for us to watch someone do what they think is best without first conducting a public opinion poll.

If not for Gainey's past history as a Hab and a Cup winning GM, I wonder how forgiving and loving many would be on this board?

I for one will critique after the season and base it on the last three seasons as our GM.

If there's one thing sports fans have in common it's short memories...I mean, come on how many of us really thought we'd be in a different position before the start of the season? Of course none of us want the season to end on Tuesday, neither does BG, but everyone in Habsland knows that even if we do by some quirk of fate make it past the first round of the playoffs after that we're gonna be knocked out. We can rant and rave and fantasize but BG doesn't have that luxury. He's gotta, as Barry would say, get 'er done. I've said this before and I'll say it again, when BG became GM he said give me four years...four years...

Teams always want to make the playoffs because good things may happen such as riding a hot goalie. Remember we upset the Bruins twice. You just never know my friend. I do know that Gainey has been at the helm for three seasons now and if we miss the playoffs, that is regressing with lost revenue.
