So as many of you know, i run a men's beer league hockey team. We play at the local rink once a week and we are a decent team for our division. We play "C" division men's hockey. Nothing too competitive, but its a lot of fun. Most of the guys on our team played at some level of competitiveness in their youth, but not very high, AAA, AA, Hub, High School, that sorta thing. We have one guy who played a handful of games in Junior B once upon a time in a galaxy far, far, away. We are competitive for our division, usually in the top 3 out of the 8 teams, but we don't blow anyone out very often, and noone blows us out very often. And we have to work hard to win games. Anyways the local rink always holds an Easter Tournament so we entered, and put ourselves down for "C" division.
Well we won our first game, and then we walked into our second game and we play a team that is basically made up of the 1/2 of the HAMILTON JR A RED WINGS who were just eliminated from the JR A playoffs like 2 weeks ago.
Needless to say they completely dominated the game, our goalie is the best player we have and once upon a time was a Roller Hockey provincial player, but now he just plays with us for fun. Well he stood on his head like you wouldn't believe. He was unreal in this game, and we still lost 8-1. They had the puck for like 90% of the game. Even if every one of our shots went in, we still wouldn't have tied the game. To me that makes the guys on the Red Wings a bunch of @#$%^!$. Thing is they were still fist pumping and banging sticks on the bench after every goal, even the slapshot from the hashmarks with 4 seconds left. I mean I don't care if you wanna play beer league to stay inshape in the off-season, more power to you, play wherever you want, but why would you enter "C" division?? The tournament convenor apologized to us after the game saying they shouldn't be in our division, but when they signed up they didn't tell him who they were and insisted on playing "C". They get a buddy who noone knows to walk in and sign up the team, since you don't have to submit a roster till the first game, and they always change their team name noone knows who they are. This also is not the first year they have done this sorta thing at a tournament. Sure this team will win the tournament, but what have they really accomplished?? Congrats guys on beating up on a bunch of guys who never played anywhere near the level you did. You should feel proud you won a "C" division hockey championship which you will today because no team will beat you. I don't know, i could never play for them, sure I coulda put our team in E or F division against the beginner players and beaten people by 7 goals too, but to me this is a dirty tactic. Very Dirty and I'm pissed about it. Everyone is there for fun and you don't intentionally do this to glorify yourself. I wanna know why they didn't join A division. Are you guys scared your not as good as you think you are. Bunch of 19 year old hotshots afraid to go up against the 23-24 year old former Junior A and college guys up there, or is it the 35-40 year old former ECHLers who scare you>??? Next time you play a tourney, play against A division, you bastards, maybe if you win A I will applaud you as having accomplished something.
I mean i've seen on beer league teams that coulda smoked these guys. Teams that had OHL and ECHL buddies. Heck one guy on our team has a brother who played OHL last year, and is currently in the CIS league, and another brother who is in the ECHL, I am friends with both of them and could ask them in a second to play for us when their season is done and they would, but I don't. And one year that we did play with them, we went A division. We are not in the same league as them, let them play against guys of their caliber. It is much more fun to win or lose a 1 or 2 goal game than to kill someone 9-1.
Anyways i hear the Red Wings are getting fake IDs so they can win the Quebec Peewee tournament next, so watch out. These guys are gonna be superstars.
At least they tape all the tournament games and sell them on DVD for $10. Everyone on the team paid $1 to get the DVD and when it arrives in two weeks I am gonna mail it to the Hamilton Coach. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know where his team has been these last few days since the season ended. HAHA
in all respect... it's hockey. play the damn game.
Perhaps it's just a game, but fair play should still prevail. Sandbagging is a coward's way of getting ahead. I've been on the receiving end of situations like Beaker's, and it's no fun.

Well this isn't the first time i've heard of it in a tournament, but this tourney has a good reputation for avoiding sandbagging. They used to return the entry fee to the winners, but don't anymore. Instead they give everyone on the team a hockey bag, or a new stick, or something of that nature. As a result teams don't sandbag like they used to. There incentive of free ice time has been taken away. That is why I don't understand these guys. Why would you want to pay money to play against inferior teams, not improve as a player, and all you are getting is a t-shirt and a hockey bag. Heck, The JNR A Red Wings supply all their players with free equipment and sticks, so why do you even need a free hockey bag???
The other thing that really annoyed me was all the fist pumping Sydney Crosby in the QMJHL playoffs style, or Theo Fleury in OT to eliminate Vancouver a few years back. I mean there is no need to go that crazy over the 8th goal in an 8-1 game. If you feel you need to keep scoring incase a Goals For/Against tie-breaker is involved thats fine, but once you are up by 3 or more, you put your head down and line up for the next faceoff. They are lucky that I only take clean disciplined hockey players on my team, because if they played some of the other men's league teams we have seen at our rink, they would've gotten really dirty and may have taken a bunch of two handers or knee on knee hits for pulling that ****. I mean guys would fight them, but you know you will lose that too, so some people would get really dirty with them. Our team is above that though. But one day they better watch they don't run into a team that isn't above doing that.
