Kirk Muller could be returning to the Canadiens, but this time behind the bench, reports the Montreal Gazette.
Muller, who recently completed his first season as head coach at Queen's University, could be joining Guy Carbonneau's coaching staff next season.
The 40-year-old played in 1,349 career NHL games with New Jersey, Montreal, the NY Islanders, Toronto, Florida and Dallas, and registered 357 goals and 602 assists for 959 points, with 1,223 penalty minutes.
Muller, known to Habs fans as Captain Kirk, will be heading to Sweden next week as an assistant coach with the Canadian team at the world under-18 championship.
I would have thought we would have gone after a Defenseman coach, a la Robinson, but I don't have a problem with Kirk. My only question is that why do we need Muller when we have Carbo and Jarvis? You'd think we would get a scoring specialst or a D coach. Ok, so maybe I do have a problem with hiring Kirk... :)
Hey, let's not knock Captain Kirk's offense. Sure he slowed down and lost a lot of skill when he was old, but he got almost 1000 pts in the NHL, and scored 100 pts twice.
Oh, and he got 20 goals in 38 playoff games for us. Not too shabby.
Anyway, I dig the fact that Muller will be coming. Carbonneau's my all-time favourite Hab from the 80s on. But Muller's up there.
