Game Thread| Habs vs Devils |04/08/06
Permalink Closed

Alright guys and gals, this is what i would call...

THE GAME OF THE YEAR....SO FAR

We are currently tied with New Jersey for 6th. Both teams have the same points and wins so the tie breaker is goal differential which Jersey holds. So a win is the only thing that will help us.

HUET MUST START SATURDAY NIGHT!!!

Jersey is NOT a high scoring team, BUT they also dont let in a lot of goals. They play the trap ( SNOOOORE ) better than any team in the league and can hurt you with their offense ...Gomez, Gionta, Madden....

Montreal needs to forecheck HEAVILY on the slow Jersey defense and make them make mistakes. Brodeur is good but he has been beatable this year if you get him off his game. 1st goal is HUGE. We score it, it forces jersey to change their game a bit. They score it, the shut down the neutral zone and play a heavy trap the rest of the game, and with the standings...i dont think jersey cares if the fans like the game...the 2 points are what matters.

Fortunately Montreal has jersey at home tomorrow night, a place were we win more than twice as many as we lose. And with what this game means, theres no doubt that montreal fans will be loud and playoff fever will definately be in the air!

Lastly a stat i just wanted to point out. Montreal on their current 8 game win streak!!!!...which has seriously had almost no attention on this board has outscored their oppenents by a score of 34-16. More than doubling the amount of goals scored to against!! Not bad for an offensively challenged team eh? They have also scored 5 or more goals in 5 of the 8 wins!

Lastly for those of you wondering, the goal differential is down to only 2 goals right now, so it is a stt we can take from them in our next game as well. If we win by 3 or more goals, the stat is ours! we currently are at even and NJ is at +2.

GO HABS GO

...this is how close things actually are..

New Jersey 76 40 27 9 89 219 217 17.4 81.8 24-11-3 16-16-6 6-3-1

7 Montreal 76 40 27 9 89 228 228 19.8 80.7 23-10-4 17-17-5 9-1-0

Great run-down, Johab.

I also noted from this morning's stats that th Habs have 228 goals for and 228 goals against.  It's been a very long time since we've been .500 in GF/GA.

Some increased scoring of late, combined with lowering the GAA has brought us there.  I hope we can end the year as a + in that department.

In the event of a tie between playoff bound teams, which stat is the first to break the tie? Head-to-head?

I'm so excited to be going to this game! You guys have no idea! I had bought these tickets in September because this game was the most convenient one I could get tickets to. And now it's looking like it's going to be a great one! I can't wait!

From NHL.com:

Tie Breaking Procedure

If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

2. The greater number of games won.

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

What? I don't know about you, but like CBC, I'm watching the Leafs-Flyers game. The leafs are only 7 points out and are sure to win the rest of their games. That Antropov is one heck of a player. What do you say, we need some offensive help, Huet straight up for that first liner Antropov?

And, of course Toronto is in IN Philly, whereas Montreal is home for a legitimate playoff deciding game, so naturally, Hockey Night in Toron... I mean Canada, will be airing the Toronto/Fliers game.  I have been the first one to point out that the CBC knows its audience and market and all that other business Brooklyhabfanavatar, but even this makes me scratch my head.

Oh well, I think I prefer "C'est la tir, et la Buuuuuuuuuuut" over Bob and Neale.

The CBC is so worried that Toronto won't make the playoffs that it will cost them over 500,000 of lost TV viewership.   Boooh hooo, my heart bleeds.   But the CBC can do one more injustice to Habs fans, and that is, assign Bob Cole and Harry Neale to do the Montreal games, ESPECIALLY, if Montreal plays Ottawa in the 1st round.

Man oh man, the mised chances in that first period.  Koivu near the end - what a save by Brodeur!  Brodeau is 27-12 lifetime against the Habs, with a GAA of 1.74 or something like that.  He's had the Habs' number for years.  This one will be a tough one to win, folks.............

Still, the boys didn't play poorly that period.  It was most entertaining.  Huet had no chance on the goal.

Yes, I hope Begin is OK.  Doesn't look good, the way he fell down.

We are really getting picked apart. Teams rarely come back from 2-0 against the Devils. We are up against the the least penalized team in the NHL and get 4 PPs, including a full 5-3, but don't score... unnaceptable. We really need to turn it up and use our speed to break that trap.

I think I might have to go back to the old Avatar of Cristobal.

He played amazing while it was that crystal ball picture, but now that I've made it the jersey, he's looking a little weak.

2-0 after two.

That second period was all New Jersey, except the Boys showed some life near the end.  But Brodeur is a big Hab-killer.

The Devils have not lost this year when leading after two (I'm trying to jinx them).

I just caught the tail end of Chantale's interview (on SRC/RDS) with an unidentified Hab player speaking French with a strange accent.  Who was that?

Canadiens means Canadians. Not Quebecors!

Started watching about mid way through the 2nd period and the way Brodeur is playing makes it very difficult for the Habs to score.  No doubt about it he is a Habs killer.  Is the penalty of obstruction not being called anymore?  I noticed at least 2 occasions where a Jersey player prevented an Habs player from getting the puck along the boards by blocking his progress. The Habs player did not have possession of the puck.   Is that not a penalty or am I wrong.  This seems to be a big part of the Devils system and allows them to play the trap perfectly.

Sad night, the Laffs are leading Philly 4-1 going into the 3rd.

Habs need to score on their PP's. We've had enough chances.

I agree.  I'm not terribly disappointed.  You can't win 'em all.  Brodeur was almost unbeatable.  That giveaway by Streit was ugly, however..........

The real down side tonight is that Atlanta will surely win, and Tampa is ahead.

I'd say it was a pretty good game. Almost a heart stopper in the last 13 seconds though Thought we were heading to OT.

It was a tough game tonight. We play Ottawa on Monday & right now they are being beaten 5-2 by Buffalo. Although we play Buffalo next Wednesday & Saturday.

Agree with you Nil.  That giveaway by Streit was really ugly and something we don't need when playing against Brodeur-he always plays his heart out in Mtl.  Habs have to regroup and win the next one.  Lets hope Begin's injury is not serious as we need him.  GO HABS GO.

They had their chances, but Brodeur shut them down.

Brodeur has only missed three games since early November - and played the Olympics during that time.  So why are we so skittish about wearing out Huet?

I agree with you totally JohnM! Let's keep the politics out of this site and out of hockey!

I live in Vancouver and I stand beside the Canadiens eventhough I should be rooting for the canucks, which I never will do. We all are Canadiens fans so let's just keep this forum for habs hockey. No room for national politics here.

Go HABS go!
