NHL "Discipline" Simply a JOKE
Permalink Closed

You know, I have tried, and tried, and tried to get inside Colin Campbell's head the last couple of years to figure out just how he comes up with "punishment" for certain indiscretions by players in the NHL...and I now must finally admit defeat. It is akin to when I was married and trying to figure out what made my ex-wife tick...impossible and frustrating.

Recent events have simply been the icing on the cake for me in this regard. First the Darcy Tucker incident. The rules (And-o you may read them if you wish) clearly state that "A deliberate intent to injure shall result in a fine and or suspension as deemed neccessary by the league". Although Tucker did not connect with his elbow against Buffalo, it was quite evident to anyone who knows the game of hockey what his intent was. As it was he went knee on knee (I guess the next best thing if you miss with the elbow to the noggin' is to go after a knee) after becoming irate after a clean check. It was very clear that he was upset and looking for the closest thing in a white sweater to take it out on. But alas..Colin Campbell in his infinite wisdom, says that no discipline was neccessary.

Well I guess Campbell figured that while he was in the "forgive and forget mood" and on a roll, he may as well look the other way for 2 incidents involving the Thrashers the other night. First of all, Kovalchuyk (who I am beginning to think may be one of the dirtiest players in the league) 2 hands Chris Neil after Neil gave him a love tap in the faceoff circle. Then Garnett Exelby just about decapitates Tyler Arnason with his elbows, giving Arnason a concussion. The "discipline"? A whopping 2500.00 fine for each of these players!!! Wow Colin!! Do you think that may be just a bit harsh?!?? I mean 2500.00!! Wow. I fully expect to see Kovalchyk standing in line in an Atlanta Area Soup Kitchen this week as I have no idea how he will survive!

You know Colin, if you are going to make a total travesty out of the game, just do not bother handing out discipline at all if it is going to be $2500.00. I am really sure that both of these players will think twice the next time they take a run at someone or 2 hand him!! Yep..I can just see Exelby "Ok boy..I better slow down and get my elbows down...because I do not want to lose that $2500.00 again".

I agree with Lindy Ruff..it is a joke. The NHL keeps talking about cleaning up the game and it's image and they allow this to go on. Pffft.

I agree with you, Barry. That is the next step that must be taken to clean up the game. It is abolutely inconceivable to allow the rules to be so obviously broken and not enforce them. Ruff should demand arbitration in the court of sports (or whatever it's called). No player is bigger than the game, or any team for that matter. Rediculous. Hopefully, other dirty players won't start playing dirtier thinking that it's okay since Tucker got away with it.

Not to harp on the Bertuzzi thing, BUT, when it gets right down to it he only was suspended for seventeen games. I guess Bettman and Campbell are counting the lockout year.

Good post Barry. Also seen the slash to Neil's wrist. It was wicked.

Yup, that incident was one of the first things I read this morning and I couldn't believe it. I wrote yesterday how dissapointed I was in Campbell and now I too, have given up. I wonder if he is just a puppet or whether he thinks old-school, vigilante justice is the way things should be.

Good post Barry, I feel exactly the same way and it seems that Toronto usually receives the blind eye from Colin. I would not be surprised if he is doing this intentionally so that Ruff can do something stupid in the next game and have multiple suspensions heading into the playoffs. There has to be an hidden agenda there but who knows????

Bob McKenzie thinks that if Fergie jr. is done in TO that Campbell may take over... sounds perfect...

I heard that also. Sounds fitting that Campbell is showing signs of already working for them. Call it an early audition!
